Collingwood vs Geelong Preview

This Friday’s clash at the MCG between Collingwood and Geelong is crucial, with significant top-eight implications for both sides.

Collingwood, currently struggling with form, recently dropped out of the top eight following a surprising 92-80 defeat to Essendon at the MCG. The loss was compounded by Brody Mihocek’s season-ending pectoral injury.

The Magpies have won only two of their last six matches, one of which was a dramatic comeback against North Melbourne after trailing by 54 points.

On the other hand, Geelong’s season has gained momentum in the past two weeks, securing convincing victories over Essendon (105-60) and Hawthorn (110-59). Before these wins, the Cats had only one win in their previous seven matches.

This will be the first encounter between these two teams in 2024. Last season, they faced off twice at the MCG, with Collingwood winning both encounters: 125-103 in Round 1 and 109-101 in Round 22.

Josh Daicos was instrumental in those victories, amassing 65 disposals, gaining 1,033 meters, and contributing to 17 scoring involvements across the two games.

He, alongside his brother, Nick, will be major players for the Magpies in their quest to stay in touch. But given the form of a number of the Cats key players, including Tom Stewart, Jeremy Cameron and Brad Close, this might be a hard one for the premiers to edge back into the eight.

Collingwood vs Geelong Stats

  • Collingwood won both games between the two sides in 2024.
