Geelong vs Essendon Preview

It’s young vs old at the MCG on Saturday afternoon, as Geelong look to make it four consecutive wins against the Bombers in the annual country festival match.

Typically, over recent years, Tom Hawkins has a field day against Essendon. He has had 56 shots in his 15 games against the Dons, losing just two of those matches. He could be the difference again on the weekend.

It wasn’t the most convincing pre-seasons for Chris Scott’s outfit, as they failed to win their unofficial scratch match against the Tigers and their AAMI Community match against the Suns, in which they were beaten convincingly.

Similarly, Essendon also fell short in their pre-season hit out in a tight contest against the Saints. They simply weren’t clinical enough by foot, but I wouldn’t look much into that for an AAMI Community Series match.

The Bombers are set to unleash tall-forward Kaine Baldwin on Saturday night, due to Harrison Jone’s unfortunate injury ruling him out of the opening weeks of the campaign.

It’s crucial that Ben Rutten’s side get off to a strong start in 2022, with the toughest of three opening matches. They face three of the four Preliminary finalists from last season – Geelong (RD 1), Brisbane (RD 2) and Melbourne (RD 3).

It’s a tough match to predict, but I believe the Cats will have the experience and nous to get the job done against a younger Essendon squad in their opening game of the season.
