GWS Giants vs Brisbane Lions Preview

The GWS Giants take on the Brisbane Lions in the AFL Semi Finals. The winner will advance through to the Preliminary Finals for a shot at Geelong, while the loser will bow out.

GWS head in as slight favourites and finished the regular season in 4th position with 15 wins from their 23 games, while Brisbane won 14 and had a draw.

The Giants faced Sydney in the first week of the finals series and led that match for the majority of the game, only to go down by six points, courtesy of a late goal to the Swans.

Brisbane were fast out of the blocks in their Elimination Final against Carlton and at one stage had registered 60 points before the Blues had scored. The Lions eventually won by 28 points, conceding some late goals in junk time.

GWS and Brisbane met as recently as Round 22 at the GABBA and it was the Giants that overcame a slow start to win by 18 points. Accurate kicking was a key reason that day with GWS kicking 13.4, while Brisbane were wasteful in front of goal for 8.16.

Both sides have some quality midfielders that can shape the game and for the Giants, Tom Green and Josh Kelly come in with some good form, while Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage found plenty of the footy for the Lions last weekend.

Jesse Hogan and Aaron Cadman loom as tall targets up forward for GWS, while Joe Daniher will be a focal point up forward for the Lions.

GWS have won both matches against the Lions this season but Brisbane claimed the five before that, including the most recent clash between the two sides at Engie Stadium. GWS won the only final between the two sides by three points back in 2019 and I suspect that this might be another close one.

Giants vs Lions Stats

  • GWS won both matches between the two sides this season.
  • The Giants finished the home and away season in 4th position, Brisbane were 5th.
  • The Lions won the last time the two sides played each other at the venue.
  • GWS won the only final between the two sides by three points
