Collingwood vs GWS Preview

The Magpies fell to a heart-breaking one-point defeat after the siren against the Lions in their last outing.

Nathan Buckley will look at what could have been against the Lions, particularly in the middle of the ground. Collingwood dominated the hit-outs 63-4 but lost the centre clearance count on the day. An area that will need to improve against a vulnerable Giants midfield without their captain.

The Magpies haven’t seemed to hit their stride yet so far this season and will be looking to capitalise on the GWS injury toll which could kick start their campaign. However, the last two matches between these sides have been decided two points and four points.

Meanwhile, the Giants are still searching for their first win of the season, following a 34-point defeat at the hands of the Demons.

It’s been hard to take for the Giants so far in 2021, with three losses to start the season and six on the trot, coming against St Kilda (eight points), Fremantle (31 points) and Melbourne (34 points), all winnable matches with one being away from home.

Not only did they suffer a 34-point loss, but they also lost three crucial members of the squad, including captain Stephen Coniglio. Their lack of tall defenders will be troublesome on Saturday night, with the likes of Mason Cox and Brody Mihocek in the forward 50, both kicking at least two goals in every match this season.

Both sides haven’t started the season the way they’d like to, and I believe the Giants still won’t be able to get their first win of the season, with the Magpies prevailing.

Magpies vs Giants Team News

The Magpies could make a couple of changes including Will Hoskin-Elliot who has had a poor start to the season.

The Giants will need to make three changes with Stephen Coniglio, Phil Davis and Matt de Boer all suffering injuries against the Demons last week.

The two sides last met in round 4 last season which saw the Giants win by two points.
