Collingwood vs GWS Preview

The final match of AFL Opening Round sees last year’s Preliminary Final combatants in action. Collingwood won that encounter at the MCG by a point before notching up a record-equalling 16th premiership when defeating Brisbane by four points in the decider.

The Magpies claimed a 30-point win in their preseason practice match against Richmond last week and had some solid contributions from a number of their stars, including Nick Daicos and Jordan de Goey.

GWS improved as the season went on last year under their first-year coach, Adam Kingsley. Tom Green and Stephen Coniglio are among a number of Giants that can match Collingwood in the middle of the ground, while Toby Greene will provide a target up forward. The Giants captain booted three goals in the Giants practice match against the Gold Coast, which yielded a 44 point win.

GWS head into this clash as slight favourites in the market but Collingwood are hard to beat no matter where they play. They have won their last five matches when playing outside of Victoria, while GWS had an indifferent time of it at GIANTS Stadium in 2023, winning four of eight.
