Carlton vs GWS Preview

The Blues were humbled against a rampant Power outfit by 95 points last time out.

Carlton looked on for a promising afternoon against the Power after a relatively even first half. However, the Power had other plans and piled on 19 consecutive goals in a goalless Carlton second half.

That was not the result required from David Teague’s perspective, as the football club’s external review grows larger despite having the second-best win rate from any Carlton coach since the turn of the century.

On a brighter note, champion of the game Eddie Betts is set to run out in the 350th and final match of his career after announcing his retirement during the week.

Meanwhile, the Giants made it back-to-back wins, with a triumph over the reigning premiers.

GWS have made a statement in the previous two weeks with comfortable wins against minor premiership contenders Geelong and the reigning premiers. Tim Taranto proved he can fill into Toby Greene’s role when needed, kicking four goals in a forward/mid role. However, they put their foot off the pedal in the second to fall just short of a dominant four-quarter performance.

Three wins in their last four matches have put Leon Cameron’s side in the best position to make the eight out of all their contenders. A win could see them face off in an elimination final against cross-town rivals Sydney.

Although the Blues season is over, they will still be keen to end the Giants finals push. However, I don’t see that happening, and a comfortable GWS win is on the cards.

Blues vs Giants Team News

Patrick Cripps is on target for a much-needed return in the middle of the ground against the Giants midfield. Marc Murphy will be excluded from the team to end his career. Eddie Betts is set to play his 350th and final career match.

The Giants are set for three massive inclusions, with Toby Greene, Stephen Coniglio and Phil Davis all returning. James Peatling is likely to be one of the players to make way, along with Jake Stein.

The two sides last met in Round 14 this season, which saw the Giants win by 36 points.
