Melbourne vs GWS Preview

The Demons returned to winning ways with an 11-point triumph over finals contenders Essendon.

Although Melbourne wasn’t at their best against the Bombers, they were resilient enough to still come away with the four points, which still sees them on top of the ladder with just two losses.

Simon Goodwin’s side were able to frustrate the Bombers ball movement and controlled the defensive 50. Defensive duo Jake Lever and Steven May combined for 18 intercepts, an obvious threat for the Giants forwards.

Meanwhile, the Giants missed out on an opportunity to return to the top eight with a loss against the Hawks.

A win for GWS would’ve seen them move into eighth spot ahead of the reigning premiers, putting them in a strong position to see out the rest of the season. Instead, they lost by 18 points, which makes the four points in this encounter so much more crucial.

You can expect them to control the tempo of the match and have a lot of numbers clogging the defensive 50, after allowing the 17th placed Hawks to take 15 marks inside 50 last week on the same ground.

Although the away side has won the previous three meetings, I can’t see the home side losing this one on Saturday afternoon.

Demons vs Giants Team News

Ben Brown kicked five goals in the VFL and will almost certainly return to the line-up in what could be Melbourne’s only change. Nathan Jones also impressed in the VFL against Essendon.

Shane Mumford is set to return along with Tom Green who got 41 disposals in the VFL last time out.

The two sides last met in Round 12 last season, which saw the Tigers win by 21 points.
