Melbourne vs Brisbane Preview

The Demons came from behind to win a dramatic heart-stopping match against the Cats by four points.

Melbourne found themselves 44 points down during the midway point of the third quarter but a dominant last quarter, with a Max Gawn goal after the siren dragged them over the line in an instant classic.

The four points secured the top spot on the ladder for Simon Goodwin’s side, as they won their first minor premiership since 1964. They went on to win the premiership that season, which is also the Demons last premiership triumph.

Meanwhile, Brisbane’s match-up wasn’t any less exciting, with a 38-point victory securing their place in the top four.

Last Saturday’s match against the Eagles was filled with highs and lows as the top four was decided in the last 30 seconds of the match. The Lions needed one point in the dying moments, which was provided by Lincoln McCarthy, a goal after the siren by Charlie Cameron topped off ecstatic scenes at the Gabba.

Brisbane has been the most lethal team in front of goal this season, scoring almost over 200 points more than any other club. Even without Eric Hipwood, the Lions have scored at least 115 points in four of their past five matches.

It will be an intriguing battle against the Melbourne defence, who are the best defensive team in the competition, with the least points scored against them. The result will be crucial on Brisbane’s forward 50 entries because they will need to limit the impact of Jake Lever and Steven May, two of the best interceptors in the competition.

Despite Melbourne being on top of the ladder, home advantage has been taken away due to the current COVID-19 situation in Victoria. I think that could play into the match, but despite that, I’m still going to back the Demons.

Demons vs Lions Team News

Jayden Hunt is still a chance to feature against the Lions, but I doubt they will name him ahead of schedule. One of James Jordon and Michael Hibberd could return to the frame.

Harris Andrews and Mitch Robinson are both chances to return to the side, as they recover from their respective injuries. Some unlucky omissions are likely to come.

The two sides last met in Round 12, which saw the Demons win by 22 points.
