Melbourne vs Brisbane Preview

Round 5 of the AFL season opens up with what shapes as an interesting clash between the Brisbane Lions and Melbourne. The two sides have had some close encounters in recent years and it is the Demons that head in as favourites on the back of the home-ground advantage as well as their superior record in 2024.

The 2021 premiers have claimed four of their five matches and are on a four-game winning streak. They enjoyed a 15-point win over Adelaide last weekend. Brisbane begun the season with three losses but bounced back in emphatic fashion against the struggling North Melbourne side in Gather Round, handing the Kangaroos a 70-point defeat.

Last year’s Grand Finalists feasted on a poor North Melbourne backline. Joe Daniher cashed in with five goals, while Eric Hipwood enjoyed a return to form with three of his own. Lachie Neale, Hugh McCluggage, Josh Dunkley and Dayne Zorko all had 25+ disposals.

That quartet will need to be at their best against a Melbourne side that have plenty of midfield depth. Christian Petracca continues to rack up big numbers, while Steven May and Jake Lever will present a much tougher opposition for Brisbane’s forwards. Kozzie Pickett will miss with suspension and is a key out, given that he has kicked nine goals in his past three matches against Brisbane.

Despite their contrasting win-loss records, I expect this one to go right down to the wire. The last three contests between the two sides have been decided by an average margin of eight points and we can expect something similar for Thursday night.
