Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn Preview
Port Adelaide take on Hawthorn in the first of the two AFL Semi Finals. The Power will be out to rebound after suffering an humiliating 84-point loss to Geelong in the Qualifying Final last weekend.
They take on a Hawks outfit that are high on confidence after a phenomenal second half of the season that has seen them rise from the depths of the ladder. They took out the highly rated Western Bulldogs by 37 points in an Elimination Final last weekend.
The two sides last met in Round 10 at the venue for this match-up, the Adelaide Oval. Hawthorn let slip a 28-point lead at three-quarter time to lose by a point. They led by 11 with less than a minute to go before an extraordinary finish that saw the Power steal victory with second remaining on the clock.
Since that match, Hawthorn have won 12 of 14 matches, while Port Adelaide have won nine. The Hawks are clearly the form side and deserve favouritism.
Sam Mitchell’s side will be missing Will Day but their midfield have been able to cover his loss in recent weeks, while their speedy half forwards will provide Port Adelaide plenty of headaches. Sam Frost is another out for the Hawks.
The Power will be relying on big games from Jason Horne-Francis, Zak Butters and Connor Rozee. Horne-Francis was one of few players that could hold their heads high after the loss to the Cats last weekend, while there are doubts on Butters, who was subbed off due to a rib injury last weekend.
The winner of the Semi Final will live to fight another day and will take on Sydney in the Preliminary Final next weekend. For the loser, it is goodnight to 2024. I suspect that will be the Power.
