Port Adelaide vs Swans Preview

The Sydney Swans take on Port Adelaide at the SCG on Friday night in the first of the two AFL Preliminary Finals and the winner will advance through to the 2024 AFL Grand Final.

Sydney head in as favourites and were the dominant side throughout the season before losing five of six matches between Round’s 17 to 22, including one to Port Adelaide by a whopping 112 points. John Longmire’s side have rebounded since then and have won their past four matches, including a six-point victory over GWS in the Qualifying Final.

Port Adelaide looked dead and buried after their 84-point loss to Geelong in the first week of the finals but brought their A-game to the Adelaide Oval last weekend when overcoming Hawthorn by three points in the sudden-death Semi Final. That came on the back of some good work by Jase Burgoyne and Ollie Wines, while Mitch Georgiades and Willie Rioli finished up the work in the forward line by combining for five goals.

The Power will probably need more from their midfield brigade to match Sydney’s Errol Gulden, Chad Warner and Isaac Heeney. The latter played one of the best finals matches in recent memory to help his side over the line against the Giants.

Sydney enjoy the home ground advantage and have won 10 of 12 at the SCG this season. But Port Adelaide have won their past eight against Sydney, a sequence that stretches back to 2016. Three of those games have been at the SCG, including a memorable encounter at the venue last season that wasn’t decided until after the final siren.
