Tigers vs Saints Preview

Sunday AFL sees St Kilda take on Richmond at Marvel Stadium in a game that will shape the bottleneck for spots in the bottom half of the top eight.

The Saints hold their spot in 7th position on the ladder but they are just one game clear of 12th placed Essendon and a fall here will have some ramifications with games against Geelong and the Brisbane Lions to follow.

Last weekend, it was a 19 point loss for St Kilda against Carlton. The Saints led by 22 points in the third quarter but were overrun late in the game, despite the efforts of Mason Wood (36 disposals) and Brad Crouch (31 disposals).

Earlier in Round 21, Richmond’s finals hoped basically ended at the hands of the Western Bulldogs with the Tigers succumbing to a 55 point loss. The Andrew McQualter coached side were slow out of the blocks, trailing by 44 points at quarter time, before being held at bay.

Tim Taranto and Jayden Short both had 25 disposals but the Tigers will need to find a lot more of the footy if they are able to reverse that result.

Hard to back St Kilda with huge amounts of confidence and aside from a blitz against Hawthorn in Round 20, they have battled to kick a winning score for a number of weeks now. Giving the nod to the Saints given what is at stake. But only just.
