Swans v Tigers Preview

Round 17 kicks off with the Thursday night clash between Richmond and Sydney and both sides will be looking to keep their faint finals hopes alive with a win.

The Swans levelled up on points with Richmond in Round 16, courtesy of their draw against Geelong, meaning that the two teams head in with six wins and a draw from their 15 matches in 2023. They are six points behind 8th placed Essendon on the ladder.

Sydney dominated their Round 16 clash against the Cats except where it mattered- on the scoreboard. John Longmire’s side booted 6.18 and had a late flurry of chances but could not seal the deal. Nick Blakey, Luke Parker and Errol Gulden all had 25+ disposals and will be out to provide plenty of drive on Thursday.

On the same weekend, Richmond’s three-match winning streak under their new coach, Andrew McQaulter, came to an abrupt end with an 81 point defeat at the hands of Brisbane. Jacob Hopper kicked two goals and had 22 disposals but there were few winners for the yellow and black.

Plenty of selection news ahead of the game with Lance Franklin to return for Sydney but Chad Warner will miss again. Jayden Short is out for Richmond but the Tigers will welcome back Dustin Martin, who missed the Round 16 clash against Brisbane due to illness. His inclusion will no doubt bolster the home side but I suspect it won’t be enough to stop Sydney, who just need to convert this time around.
