St Kilda vs Essendon Preview

St Kilda will be looking to return into the top four on Friday night against the hapless Bombers after falling to their first defeat in four matches against the Lions in their last outing.

Nevertheless, it is still a performance they can be proud of. The Saints managed to maintain the lead for the majority of the first half but crumbled away in the second half to leave some question marks over their contender’s status. They must return to winning ways.

Meanwhile, Essendon’s 150-year celebrations were short-lived against rivals Carlton last week. A speech from Dyson Heppell with past and present players on the field wasn’t enough, as they were once again lacklustre in defeat. It is now four consecutive losses for Ben Rutten’s side.

Being able to kick a winnable score is an obvious issue for the red and black, only managing to kick a mere 49 points on average across their previous four matches. James Stewart was chucked forward in his return to the VFL last week, kicking three majors, and will likely come in and play up forward against the Saints.

They could be set for a major loss, with Darcy Parish injuring his calf in the match against the Blues. Whilst Andrew McGrath is set to return.

It has the feeling that Essendon could pull off an upset, considering the match is at Marvel, (the stadium that has seen both of their wins this season). However, it could prove too big of a task.

Saints vs Bombers Stats
