St Kilda vs GWS Giants Preview

GWS will be out to maintain their unbeaten streak in 2024 and take on St Kilda in the first of four AFL matches on Saturday with the game to be played at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Last year’s Preliminary Finalists have won all four of their matches this season by an average margin of 41 points and top the ladder in the early stages. They are one of just three sides in the competition that are yet to drop a game.

St Kilda head in with a win-loss record of 2-2 and scraped through after a slow start against Richmond in Gather Round, taking out last Sunday’s clash by seven points at Norwood Oval. The Saints have been hard hit by injuries and remain without a number of key players.

It was some of their seasoned players that stepped up last weekend with Jack Steele, Jack Sinclair and Callum Wilkie all producing solid matches against the Tigers. Jack Higgins (two goals) was the only multiple goal kicker.

GWS added Gold Coast to their list of victims, handing the Suns a 28-point defeat. Lachie Whitfield, Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio all had 25+ disposals, while Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan combined for nine goals.

Hogan leads the competition for goals scored this season and has kicked 16 goals at an average of four per game and the Giants have plenty of options up forward. They have now won eight of their past nine game with their only loss in that period a one-point margin against Collingwood in the Preliminary Final.

Those include a 34-point victory over St Kilda in the Elimination Final last year. On face value, it looks like a similar margin might be in store but the Giants will need to overcome a poor recent record at Manuka Oval, having lost nine of their past 10 at their second home ground.

GWS vs St Kilda Stats

  • St Kilda have won four of their past five matches against GWS but went down to the Giants the most recent time the two sides played, with that coming in the Elimination Final last year.
  • The two sides have met at Manuka Oval on two occasions for one win apiece.
  • The Giants have lost nine of their past 10 at the venue.
  • GWS top the competition for goals per game this season at 17.2, while St Kilda are 15th in this measure with 10.2 goals per game.
  • GWS top the competition for average disposals, while St Kilda are 3rd in this measure.
