St Kilda vs West Coast Eagles Preview

The Saints were made to pay for their lack of effort against the Bombers, losing their round three encounter by 75 points.

It was a horrid day at the office for St Kilda, getting dominated from the very first bounce to the final siren. The lack of defensive effort was plain to see, with Essendon having a whopping 108 more uncontested possessions than Saints.

However, their issues out of the middle of the ground are set to be aided, with the return of promising ruckman Rowan Marshall who is yet to feature in 2021. St Kilda’s small forwards haven’t been performing to Brett Ratten’s liking so far this season and will need to prove their worth before it gets too late.

Meanwhile, the Eagles cruised to another home triumph, defeating premiership contenders Port Adelaide by 37 points.

West Coast put in a workman-like performance and showed that they can still provide the goods on home turf. Now it’s time for them to win crunch matches like these against opponents also tipped to play finals before the start of the season.

It’s a weapon to have one deadly goalkicker in front of goal, but the Eagles have two. Considering St Kilda have been elite in contested marking this season, Adam Simpson will look to isolate his tall forwards to have the greatest influence on the scoreboard.

The ruck duel between up-and-coming ruckman Marshall and the dominant Nic Naitanui will be one to look out for on Saturday afternoon.

Although the match is at Marvel Stadium, I believe the Eagles will cruise to a third win of the season if St Kilda plays the way they did against Essendon last week.

Saints vs Eagles Team News

The Saints are set to make a number of changes after their disappointing outing last week. Rowan Marshall is set to return, along with Jimmy Webster. Jade Gresham will be out for the season following his Achilles injury.

West Coast will most likely only make one change, with Luke Shuey injuring his hamstring. Xavier O’Neill or Zane Trew are the likely replacements for the skipper.

The two sides last met in round 17 last season which saw the Eagles win by 15 points.
