Swans vs GWS Giants Preview

The competition’s two Sydney sides, the Sydney Swans and the GWS Giants, go at it in the Qualifying Final on Saturday September 7 at the SCG. The game gets underway at 3:20pm AEST.

Sydney qualified in top spot with 17 wins for the season, while their cross-town rivals, GWS, won 15 of their 23 home and away matches. The Swans were victorious in the two matches between the two sides this season, winning by 27 points in Round 15 and 29 points in Round 8. John Longmire’s side have won five of the past six matches against GWS.

They tuned up for finals action with a 21-point victory over the Adelaide Crows at the SCG. Nick Blakey and Matt Roberts both had 30+ disposals, while Luke Parker and Logan McDonald snagged three majors. Isaac Heeney missed that game and will be welcome addition to the 23 for the Qualifying Final.

GWS headed into their Round 24 match safe in the knowledge they had secured a top four spot. They faded late in the match in blustery conditions at Ballarat against the Western Bulldogs, going down by 37. That came despite the work of Lachie Whitfield (42 disposals) and Tom Green (37 disposals).

The Giants had won seven matches in a row prior to that loss. In the same period, Sydney had won just three of eight. Jesse Hogan looms as a focal point for the Giants and has kicked 69 goals this season, claiming the Coleman Medal in the process.

Adam Kingsley’s side are set to regain some key players, including Brett Daniels. Tom Papley is set to join Heeney as a possible inclusion for Sydney. It is hard to split these two, given what has transpired over the past couple of months and we can expect this one to go right down to the wire.

Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants Stats

  • The Giants have won seven of their past eight.
  • Sydney have won three of their past eight matches.
  • The Swans have won five of their past six matches against the Giants.
