Sydney vs Melbourne Preview

The opening match of the season pits two of last years finalists together. Both bowed out at the hands of Carlton in September last season with Sydney finishing up in 8th spot, while Melbourne ended in 6th after their straight sets exit.

The Swans head into this as slight favourites on the back of the home ground advantage but will need to work on their forward entries after registering just eight goals in their practice match against the Brisbane Lions last Thursday, going down by 25 points to last years Grand Finalists.

Logan McDonald and Joel Amarty will be among the targets up forward as the home side look to fill the void created by the retirement of Buddy Franklin. Brodie Grundy is amongst the new faces for the Swans and takes on his former side, Melbourne.

The battle between Grundy and Max Gawn will be a highlight. Expect Gawn to give the Dees first use and supply the likes of Christian Petracca and Jack Viney, who both registered over 20 disposals in Melbourne’s 38-point practice match win over Carlton.

The two sides met as recently as Round 24 last year and it was the Demons that raced away in the last term to win by 21 points at the SCG. They look over the odds in this clash and can open up their account with a win.
