West Coast vs Essendon Preview

West Coast finds themselves with the best chance to win their second game of the season against the Bombers on Friday night. It has been an abysmal season so far, to say the least for Adam Simpson’s side.

However, they did show signs of improvement against top four contenders Geelong, managing to hit the front at one point in the early stages of the third term. In fact, their previous seven losses before that match were by an average margin of 73 points.

Experienced veteran forwards Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy will need to stand out and lead the line from the front if they are any chance to win. Darling has 21 goals in 12 against Essendon, whilst Kennedy has 39 in 17.

Elsewhere, the Bombers returned to the winner’s list, breaking a run of four consecutive defeats in style against St Kilda in their last outing by 35 points. It was just their third win of the season, all of which have come at Marvel Stadium.

Nevertheless, they did prevail in the previous meeting at Optus Stadium last season, which spurred them onto a strong second half of the campaign to eventually finish in the top eight.

Although it is too late this season, this is still arguably a more important clash than their win over the Saints last weekend. If they are to lose, the spotlight will return on them.

The Eagle’s ninth consecutive loss has equalled an unwanted club record, and I do believe that record will be broken on Friday night, with Ben Rutten’s outfit winning back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
