Hawthorn vs West Coast Preview

We see the competition’s cellar dwellers up against one another with Hawthorn hosting West Coast at UTAS Stadium. The two sides sit 17th and 18th on the ladder with West Coast just shading the Hawks for 17th spot by 0.5 of a percentage point.

Hawthorn’s one and only win this season came against fellow strugglers, North Melbourne, at this venue back in Round 3. Since then, the Hawks have gone down by some big margins to record six losses on the trot. They did come close on a couple of occasions in that period and went down by just three points against Adelaide at their last match in Launceston.

West Coast have lost seven in a row and the most recent of those came against Gold Coast in Perth by 70 points. Oscar Allen booted two goals and has been one of the shining lights this season. He will provide a target for the Eagles up forward, while Liam Duggan and Tim Kelly should give the Eagles forwards a bit of supply.

Scoring has been an issue for both side and the Hawks rank last in the competition for goals scored this season. They registered just seven majors against Melbourne in Round 9 with five of those coming in the third term.

Mitch Lewis could only manage one goal and might find himself up against Tom Barrass this weekend. Will Day topped the disposal count with 29 and probably leads the Hawks best and fairest at this stage of the season.

Injuries continue to be a massive issue for West Coast and this might be the sticking point in their quest to chalk up their first win since Round 2. A number of the Eagles big names are still weeks away from returning, while Hawthorn head in with a relatively healthier list so I am expecting Sam Mitchell’s side to get the upper hand in this one.

Hawks vs Eagles Stats

  • The two sides have combined for just two wins this season from a total of 18 games. Hawthorn’s was in Round 3, West Coast’s in Round 2.
  • West Coast have covered the line in their past four away matches against Hawthorn.
  • Hawthorn’s last four games at UTAS Stadium have gone under the total match points line.
  • West Coast have won four of the past six between the two sides but they haven’t faced each other at the venue since 2014.
  • Tyler Brockman has booted 2+ goals in his past two games at UTAS Stadium.
  • Andrew Gaff has 27+ disposals in his past 10 games against Hawthorn.
