Round 21 opens on Thursday night at CommBank Stadium, where a wounded, ladder-leading Penrith side visits a struggling Parramatta, before a Queensland derby — Cowboys v Broncos, the pick of the round — headlines Saturday. Parramatta Eels vs Penrith Panthers

Prediction: Panthers to win by 13+ points

The round opens on Thursday with the minor-premiership leaders out to make a point. Penrith (1st, 13-4) suffered a rare stumble last week — a 14-12 loss to Brisbane — and now face a Parramatta side (15th, 6-11) that has been leaking points. Nathan Cleary steers a near full-strength Panthers outfit; Mitchell Moses returns for the Eels.

Wounded competition leaders against a bottom-four side rarely ends well for the underdog — back Penrith to respond firmly and win by two converted tries or more.

Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters

Prediction: Roosters to win by 1-12 points

Third-placed Sydney Roosters (12-5) travel to McDonald Jones on a two-win run to meet a Newcastle side (6th, 11-7) that has lost its last two by a combined four points. Both are firmly in the finals mix, and the Knights at home with September on the line will not go quietly.

The Roosters’ form and finals professionalism edge it, but Newcastle’s knack of staying close says take the Chooks in the tight band.

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm

Prediction: Storm to win by 1-12 points

A genuine coin-flip between two misfiring sides fighting to stay in finals reach. South Sydney (7th, 9-8) are without captain Cameron Murray, a significant loss, while Melbourne (11th, 8-10) welcome back Jahrome Hughes.

Hughes’ return tips a near-even contest marginally the Storm’s way, but this is low-confidence — both attacks have sputtered and it is one for small stakes or the close-margin markets.

Canberra Raiders vs Wests Tigers

Prediction: Raiders to win comfortably

The round’s most one-sided read on form. Canberra (12th, 8-10) have posted big scores in back-to-back wins, while the Wests Tigers (14th, 7-11) have shipped 64 unanswered points across their last two outings.

Canterbury Bulldogs vs New Zealand Warriors

Prediction: Warriors to win by 1-12 points

Second-placed New Zealand (12-5) are cruising and cross to Accor Stadium to face a Canterbury side (10th, 8-9) that blows hot and cold — but the Bulldogs get a lift with captain Stephen Crichton recalled at five-eighth.

The Warriors’ top-two form should see them home, but Crichton’s return keeps the Dogs competitive: take the Warriors inside two converted tries.

North Queensland Cowboys vs Brisbane Broncos

Prediction: Broncos to win by 1-12 points

The game of the round — a Queensland derby and a genuine 50-50. The Cowboys (8th, 10-8) are clinging to the final finals spot but were belted 36-16 by the Dolphins last week; the Broncos (13th, 6-11) arrive full of confidence after toppling Penrith.

We lean the Broncos on momentum, but home ground and finals urgency make the Cowboys live — flag this as the true toss-up of the round and keep any bet small.

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Gold Coast Titans

Prediction: Titans to win by 1-12 points

A basement clash with the sources split. The Dragons (17th, 2-15) have won just twice all season but hold home advantage; the Titans (16th) put 38 points on Manly last start but are without AJ Brimson.

It is a coin-flip: we lean Gold Coast on recent scoring form, but the Dragons at home in a low-stakes clash keep it close — low-confidence, small stakes only.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Cronulla Sharks

Prediction: Sharks to win by 1-12 points

Fourth-placed Cronulla (11-6) are the form team of the competition — fresh off a 66-0 demolition and a gritty win over Newcastle — and chase a top-four spot at Brookvale. Manly (9th, 9-9) are dangerous at home with a strong points differential.

Back the Sharks on their red-hot run, but respect a Manly fightback on their own patch and keep the margin inside 13.
