Roosters vs Knights Preview & Prediction

The Roosters begin their missions to return to the champions corner when they play host to the Knights at the SCG on Saturday afternoon.

It was a nightmare campaign for the Roosters last season, with the club enduring a horror injury toll, but they still managed to finish the regular season in fifth position.

With Luke Keary and Lindsay Collins returning from ACL injuries, along with some other key players fully fit for Round 1, the Roosters will be gunning for the premiership in 2022.

Keary and Sam Walker is one of the most exciting halves pairings for the season, while the likes of James Tedesco, Joey Manu, Angus Crichton and Victor Radley will be fired up and ready to go for a big year.

It’s the perfect opening round for the Roosters, with the club playing just five games at the SCG last season. They’ve won 18 of 23 games at the venue since 2019 and will be confident of conquering the Knights – a team they’ve handled comfortably over the last few years.

Newcastle have a decent side on paper, but you get the feeling their finals hopes lie on the shoulders of Kalyn Ponga – if he gets injured for an extended period of time, it’s likely they will finish closer to the wooden spoon.

The Knights look short in the halves after the departure of Mitchell Pearce, with Jake Clifford and Adam Clune starting the season in the six and seven.

There’s definite strike power out wide with the likes of Bradman Best, Dane Gagai and Enari Tuala, but will they get enough quality ball to deliver?

VERDICT:

The Roosters should cruise to victory here, especially with Keary back pulling the strings – they’ve won 10 of their last 11 meetings with the Knights and 18 of their last 23 at the SCG.

We’re backing the Roosters to win 13+ as our best bet – they’ve won by 15 or more points in nine of their last 10 wins over the Knights and are set for another big victory on Saturday (Best Roosters 13+ odds $1.83 with Sportsbet.)
