Panthers vs Eels Preview and Prediction

A preliminary final date with reigning premiers Melbourne awaits the winner as the Panthers and Eels do battle in Mackay on Saturday night.

After surging into the finals on the back arguably the best form out of any team in the top eight, the Panthers all of a sudden find themselves in an elimination match after going down to the Rabbitohs in a brutal clash last week.

Penrith couldn’t find a way past a brick-wall Rabbitohs defence, falling 16-10 and now facing the prospect of having to defeat the Eels and Storm just to return to the Grand Final.

It was a hugely disappointing defeat for the Panthers and it will be interesting to see how they bounce back in this showdown.

Parramatta haven’t been impressive over the last couple of months – save for a shock upset over Melbourne, but the Storm were saving themselves for the finals over the last couple of weeks of the regular season.

The Eels went on a four-match losing streak that included conceding 96 points against the Rabbitohs and Sea Eagles, while a depleted Parramatta outfit also leaked 40 points to the Panthers in the final round of the regular season.

Brad Arthur’s side then barely held off a poor Newcastle Knights side in the opening week of the finals, needing a penalty try in the last couple of minutes to confirm a 28-20 victory.

Without back-to-back finals wins since 2009 and having struggled against the Panthers in recent times, it doesn’t look like the Eels will be able to offer much resistance here.

VERDICT:

Penrith were far from their best last week, but this team is experienced enough now to right the wrongs and come out firing for this clash.

The Panthers have won six of the last eight meetings between the teams and have kept the Eels to 20 points or less in the last 12 encounters.

We’re not expecting too many points in this game, but the Panthers should still prevail relatively comfortably (Best Panthers win & under 48.5 points odds $1.88 with Sportsbet.)
