Penrith Panthers vs Parramatta Eels Preview & Prediction
The Panthers target a ninth consecutive victory when they come up against the struggling Eels at BlueBet Stadium on Thursday night.
These two teams squared off in the Grand Final last season, but they couldn’t have suffered more contrasting results in 2023.
Penrith are on track for another minor premiership, flying at the top of the ladder, while it will take a huge performance from any side to deny them a historic three-peat.
Meanwhile, the Eels got off to a rocky start and never really recovered, coming into this clash having lost four of their last five games to see their finals chances evaporate.
It will be the first time since 2018 that Parramatta haven’t featured in the finals, while the loss of Mitch Moses to injury means this match could get ugly for the visitors.
The Eels have leaked 34+ points in their last three defeats and 46+ in three of their last five.
Penrith dropped 40 points on the Titans, who are in a similar position to the Eels, last week and will be keen to make a statement heading into the finals.
There’s also a possibility Penrith can wrap up the minor premiership this weekend if Brisbane (without Adam Reynolds) lose to Canberra, which would give Ivan Cleary the opportunity to rest his star players ahead of the finals.
VERDICT
The Eels can’t win this game without Moses and there’s really not much value going around with the Panthers as huge favourites.
We’ll back the Panthers to score Over 30.5 points. As mentioned, the Eels are in disarray and have leaked 34+ points in their last three defeats to the Roosters, Broncos and Storm. Penrith are in that class and at home, they should be primed to rack up another big total (Best Panthers Team Total Points Over 30.5 odds $1.80 with bet365.)
