Panthers vs Eels Preview and Prediction
It’s shaping as an unmissable battle of the west at the foot of the mountains as Penrith and Parramatta renew their rivalry on Friday night.
The Eels are the only team to have defeated the Panthers in 2020, staging a fantastic comeback in Round 5 to come away 16-10 winners – the second straight meeting between the teams where the match has finished as that scoreline.
While the Eels have managed to stay the course for the most part and remain in the top four since that encounter, it’s been Penrith who have put together their best ever regular season, winning 15 matches and bringing a 12-match winning streak into this showdown.
Stephen Crichton has established himself as the best young centre in the game and has scored at least one try in each of his last nine matches in Sydney, while Nathan Cleary has put his lockdown troubles behind him to become arguably the game’s best halfback.
The old saying goes that teams on big winning streaks are better off losing before the finals, so only time will tell if that rings true for Penrith, but you get the feeling it’s almost impossible for them to continue winning all the way through to the Grand Final.
Parramatta have been far from their best over the last month or so, struggling to score points as Mitchell Moses continues to come in and out of games.
However, I think the Eels can pull off the upset in this one. They have the confidence from beating Penrith earlier in the season and I also believe the Panthers are due a loss before the finals – especially after their flat performance last week against the Broncos.
The Eels are great value at $4.20 (1-12) and worth backing home on Friday night.
