Raiders vs Tigers Preview and Prediction

Canberra have transformed into one of the NRL’s most consistent teams over the last few years and they will be confident of getting their 2021 season off to a winning start when they host the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

After reaching the Grand Final in 2019 and preliminary finals last year, the Raiders are once again expected to challenge for the premiership this season.

The fitness of Josh Hodgson will be key for the Green Machine in 2021 – the English hooker missed most of last season through injury, but the Raiders still managed to come within one victory of the Grand Final.

If Hodgson can stay on the park, the Raiders will be thereabouts come the business end of the season.

Josh Papalii is another player who starred for Canberra last season and the big enforcer will be determined to carry that form over into this year.

Meanwhile, the Tigers will be hoping to make the finals for the first time in a decade and avoid finishing in the dreaded ninth spot once more.

Inconsistency has plagued the Tigers for much of their existence since forming a joint-venture, but Michael Maguire is convinced his side are starting to turn a corner.

They have a backline filled with speed and talent, including James Roberts, Joey Leilua, David Nofoaluma, Moses Mbye and Luke Brooks, while James Tamou adds vital experience to the forwards this season.

The problem for the Tigers is that their best and worst is light years apart. They are far too erratic from week to week and until they fix that issue, they can’t expect to consistently challenge the best teams.

It’s always somewhat difficult to predict what will happen in these Round 1 games, but the Raiders have dominated the Tigers in recent years and at this stage, there’s no reason to suggest that won’t continue on Sunday.

Sebastian Kris comes into the Raiders’ centres for Jarrod Croker, who is battling a shoulder injury, while Bailey Simonsson replaces Nick Cotric on the wing. Veteran recruit Ryan James lines up on the bench.

Daine Laurie will start the season as No. 1 for the Tigers, while James Roberts and Joey Leilua form a potentially destructive centre pairing.
