FC Porto vs Sporting Preview & Prediction

The first big heavyweight clash of the 22/23 Liga Portugal season awaits on Saturday night as FC Porto play host to Sporting Lisbon.

Porto have got their title defence off to the perfect start, crushing Maritimo 5-1 on the opening day before toughing out a 1-0 victory over Vizela on the road last week.

Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi was on target twice for Porto in the thumping win over Maritimo, while Spanish defender Ivan Marcano was the hero last week, netting in the 90th minute to hand his side all three points.

Sergio Conceicao’s troops are coming off a third league title in five years last season and are currently riding a 10-game winning streak in all competitions dating back to April. Perfect preparation for one of the biggest games of the season here.

Sporting haven’t had any trouble finding the back of the net to open the season, scoring six goals across their first two matches.

Ruben Amorim’s side drew 3-3 away to Braga in the opening week before rolling over the top of Rio Ave last week by a 3-0 scoreline.

Pedro Gonclaves is looking strong to start the campaign, scoring once against Braga before bagging a brace last week against newly-promoted Rio Ave.

After finishing six points behind Porto in the title race last season, Sporting will be determined to turn the tables this term – but they will have to overturn a five-game winless run in this H2H to gain early bragging rights.

VERDICT:

It promises to be a cracking contest, but it’s hard to look past Porto at home.

Porto are on a 10-game winning streak and are undefeated in the last five encounters between the teams, while Sporting haven’t been entirely convincing recently, winning just two of their last eight games going back to the end of last season.

Meanwhile, Daniel Braganca is still sidelined with an ACL injury for Sporting, while forward Paulinho is also in doubt after missing last week’s win over Rio Ave through injury.

Hidemasa Morita is an option to come into the starting side after Sporting lost midfield star Nunes to Wolves in the Premier League.
