Two semi-finals, both sudden death, and the winners earn a preliminary final away to Hawthorn or Sydney. Fremantle host Geelong at Optus Stadium on Friday, Brisbane host Adelaide at the Gabba on Saturday.

Two games, both sudden death, and the winners walk into a preliminary final. Hawthorn and Sydney already hold the home preliminary finals after winning their qualifying finals, so the four sides left this weekend are playing for the right to travel and meet them. Hawthorn wait on the Brisbane against Adelaide winner, Sydney wait on the Fremantle against Geelong winner.

Both semi-finals pair a qualifying-final loser at home against an elimination-final winner. That is the structural tension of week three: the home side has had the week off but arrives beaten, and the visitor is playing its second final in eight days but arrives on a win. Fremantle vs Geelong

Semi-final, Friday 11 September at 8:10pm AEST, which is 6:10pm AWST locally, at Optus Stadium. Sudden death, and the winner travels to Sydney for a preliminary final.

Fremantle finished the home-and-away season 19-4 with a percentage of 137.2, the best record in the competition, and have not played since Hawthorn beat them 72-40 in the qualifying final. That is the number that frames this game. A 32-point defeat is not a disaster on its own, but the way Hawthorn shut the game down raised a real question about how this side handles a defensive squeeze, and it leaves a fortnight without a competitive win for a team whose season was built on rhythm. The personnel are still there: Andrew Brayshaw at 24.6 disposals a game, Murphy Reid at 24.0 and Shai Bolton at 23.9 give them midfield depth, while Jye Amiss (2.5 goals a game) and Josh Treacy (2.4) are the most balanced two-pronged attack left in the draw.

Geelong arrive the other way entirely. They were 15-8 at 122.3 per cent, they have won five in a row, and they dismantled Carlton 107-74 in the elimination final. Bailey Smith has been the most prolific ball-winner in the competition at 32.3 disposals a game with Max Holmes on 29.2 behind him, and Jeremy Cameron at 2.8 goals a game is the most productive forward still playing. The trade-off is the schedule: a second final in eight days, and a flight west to play it.

The record is level at three apiece but the scoring is not: Geelong average nine points more per meeting and own the only blowout between them. Two things in that table matter more than the ledger. The first is that these two do not play close games, with none of the six decided by a goal or less, so the margin is the live question rather than the winner. The second is Perth, where they have met three times and Fremantle have won two, including the round 15 return this year. That is the case for the home side, and it is why we will take Fremantle. But a team beaten by 32 in its most recent outing, against an opponent on a five-game streak, is not one to back heavily.

Brisbane vs Adelaide

Semi-final, Saturday 12 September at 7:35pm AEST at the Gabba. Sudden death, and the reigning premiers are playing for their season.

Sydney beat Brisbane 141-88 in the qualifying final. A 53-point defeat was the heaviest of the Lions’ year and it leaves a live question about whether that was one bad night or something structural. The season record argues for the former: 16-7 at 121.7 per cent, with Lachie Neale still winning 30.4 disposals a game and Logan Morris (2.7 goals a game) and Charlie Cameron (2.1) both among the most productive forwards left in September.

Adelaide arrive on a 90-68 win over the Western Bulldogs, their first finals victory in nine years, from a 15-8 season at 117.3 per cent. Wayne Milera has been their most consistent ball user at 26.0 disposals a game with Sam Berry on 22.9. The problem is the venue and the schedule stacked together: a second final in seven days, interstate, against a side that has had the week off.

The pattern here is unusually clean, and it splits by venue. Half of these six have been decided by a goal or less, so on neutral ground this is close to a coin toss. The Gabba is not neutral: Brisbane have won all three meetings there, and the only blowout in the fixture was this season’s 52-point home win. Adelaide’s two wins both came at Adelaide Oval. A wounded premier at its own ground against a side backing up and travelling to do it is the read, and we will take Brisbane by more than two goals.
