Panthers vs Broncos Preview and Prediction

Penrith target their seventh straight win in Queensland when they come up against the struggling Broncos on Saturday night at Suncorp.

Ivan Cleary’s side faced their first true challenges of the season throughout the Origin period as they lost two games and surrounded their competition lead to Melbourne, but now the Panthers can focus on the back-end of the season as they chase back-to-back minor premierships.

Jarome Luai is back for the Panthers this week, but Nathan Cleary is still sidelined with the injury he sustained during Origin II.

The Panthers aren’t firing on all cylinders like they were to begin the season, but they’ve still won their last three matches, including a 30-16 victory over the Warriors last week.

A top four spot is all but wrapped up, but Penrith will want to find their best form before the finals and challenge Melbourne for top spot.

Meanwhile, the Broncos still haven’t won back-to-back games since the first two rounds of the 2020 season after giving up the lead four times in a 42-24 loss to the Tigers last week.

With the Bulldogs’ form improving each week, the Broncos aren’t out of the wooden spoon race as they attempt to avoid consecutive last-placed finishes.

While they will almost certainly lose this game, the Broncos have pushed the Panthers relatively close in their last two encounters, while their massive upset win over the Roosters should also be in the back of their mind.

VERDICT:

Penrith are unbackable favourites once again, but we can get some value from the total points market.

With Cleary still sidelined, the Panthers haven’t been at their polished best in attack, while they’ve also only scored 25 and 20 points in their last two games against Brisbane.

The Panthers’ defence remains in top shape (they’ve conceded less points all season than the Broncos have in their last five games), so we’ll be backing a low-scoring but routine win for Penrith (best Panthers win & under 50.5 points odds $2.00 with Ladbrokes).
