Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos Preview & Prediction

The stage is set for a cracking NRL Grand Final showdown as the Panthers and Broncos collide at Accor Stadium on Sunday night.

Penrith and Brisbane were the two clear standout teams throughout the regular season and were in a battle for the minor premiership right up until the final round.

Now, the two heavyweight clubs battle for supremacy with the NRL’s ultimate prize on the line.

The Panthers are chasing history, attempting to become the first team in four decades to win three consecutive premierships, while the Broncos are aiming to secure their first piece of silverware since 2006 and at the same time erase the memories of their last appearance in a Grand Final, which resulted in that heartbreaking golden point defeat to the Cowboys in 2015.

Both teams were dominant in their preliminary final victories, with the Panthers crushing the Storm 38-4 and the Broncos demolishing the Warriors 42-12.

Momentum is high for both teams too, with the Panthers winning 11 of their last 12 outings and the Broncos tasting victory in nine of their last 10.

These two teams were easily the best defensive teams in the competition in 2023 and that was reflected in their two previous meetings, with the Broncos upsetting Penrith 13-12 in Round 1 before the Panthers got revenge to the tune of a 15-4 triumph a couple of months later.

There’s no changes to either club’s winning preliminary final 17, with Jarome Luai and Izack Tago getting through the Storm game unscathed, while Herbie Farnworth has been named despite picking up a hamstring niggle in training.

VERDICT

It promises to be an exhilarating Grand Final between the two best teams in the competition. Nathan Cleary and Adam Reynolds collide in a huge halfback battle, while there’s potential for Reece Walsh and Jarome Luai to come together after their heated exchange in Origin earlier in the season. Dylan Edwards won the Clive Churchill Medal in last year’s showpiece and will be keen to upstage Walsh, who has been electric and rightfully stolen all the headlines in the lead-up.

The forward battle will be intense, with Payne Haas, Patty Carrigan and Thomas Flagler leading the way for the Broncos and Moses Leota, James Fisher-Harris and Isaah Yeo setting the platform for Penrith through the middle.

I think the Broncos represent good value as underdogs, but our best bet is Under 38.5 total points. As mentioned, these two teams are so strong defensively, with their two previous meetings this season producing 19 & 25 total points. Eight of the last 12 Grand Finals have also seen Under 38.5 points, with two of those misses coming with 40 points.

In terms of H2H, the Broncos can cause the upset. There’s a reason no team in 40 years has won three premierships in a row. The little one percenters are so tough to keep replicating and that makes all the difference in a GF. Brisbane are young, fresh and full of enthusiasm in their first Grand Final and the Panthers have looked below their peak a lot of times throughout the season.

Offloads are key to disrupting Penrith’s rhythm and the Broncos had 23 in total against the Warriors last week, along with 11 line breaks. Their attack is capable of penetrating the rock solid Penrith defence (Best Under 38.5 total points odds $1.91 with bet365.)
