Raiders vs Knights Preview & Prediction

It’s a huge game for the Raiders as they look to keep pace with the top eight when they entertain the lowly Knights in the nation’s capital on Sunday afternoon.

Canberra can probably count themselves a bit unlucky to be languishing in 11th spot on the ladder given they have won four of their last six games, defeating the likes of the Roosters, Sharks and Rabbitohs during that period.

Ricky Stuart’s side went down in close games to top six teams the Eels and Broncos in those other two outings, so the Green Machine have been travelling okay over the last six weeks or so.

However, it will count for nothing if they can’t to the job over Newcastle in front of their own fans. The Raiders copped a bit of heat for not being able to close out a Brisbane side who lost Adam Reynolds, Payne Haas and Herbie Farnworth to injury last week, while their second-half woes haven’t fully evaporated yet.

Meanwhile, the Knights continue to struggle and come into this clash having lost nine of their last 11 games – including last week’s crushing 42-6 loss to the Panthers.

Newcastle have scored the fewest amount of points in the competition and their only three wins since the opening round have been against the Warriors, Bulldogs and Tigers – the three clubs to sack their coaches this season.

With that in mind, it’s going to be a massive challenge for the Knights to cause the upset in Canberra, despite the fact they’ve won the last three meetings between the teams.

VERDICT:

As mentioned, Newcastle have had success in this match-up recently, but there’s just no way you can back them with any sort of confidence right now.

Canberra, led by Joseph Tapine (who is playing career-best football) and Jack Wighton, have been playing well over the last six weeks and if they can maintain that level, they should be able to run out comfortable winners (Best Raiders -10.5 line odds $1.91 with bet365.)
