Newcastle Knights vs Canberra Raiders Preview & Prediction

Newcastle fans are daring to dream as their Knights side host a home final for the first time since 2006 when they tackle the Raiders at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.

Languishing in 14th position on the ladder just a couple of months ago, the Knights surged into fifth spot on the back of nine consecutive victories and have all the momentum heading into the finals.

Seven of those wins were by 13+ margins, including a 28-6 triumph over the Raiders on the road back in July.

Kalyn Ponga has been arguably the best player in the competition during the Knights’ nine-match winning run and fans will be hoping the star fullback is injury-free after missing last week with a shoulder problem.

The entire Newcastle backline has been electric over the last two months – Dominic Young is scoring tries for fun in supremely athletic fashion, Bradman Best is brimming with confidence after making his Origin debut and Greg Marzhew is an absolute battering ram out wide.

Meanwhile, the Raiders have been bang average for most of the season truth be told and can count themselves lucky to be featuring in the finals.

Canberra never won a match by more than 12 points and have been terrible lately, last beating a team outside of the bottom four in Round 17.

The Raiders have lost three of their last four games and are without key forwards Josh Papalii and Corey Horsburgh for the finals, so they have it all to do here.

VERDICT

If the Knights don’t succumb to the pressure, they should be winning this comfortably.

McDonald Jones Stadium will be absolutely rocking and the Knights are the form team in the competition, with seven of their last nine wins coming by 13+ margins.

I guess there’s always a slight chance of a random Raiders ambush – they’ve done it before (think Melbourne in the finals last season), but all signs point to another big Knights win on Sunday (Best Knights 13+ margin odds $1.95 with bet365.)
