Knights vs Raiders Preview and Prediction

Canberra go in search of their fourth consecutive victory and a spot inside the top eight when they face Newcastle at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.

It appeared as if the Raiders’ season was over when they slipped as low as 12th on the ladder after losing eight of 10 games at one stage, but they’ve bounced back superbly over the last few weeks.

Ricky Stuart’s side have come from nowhere since their crushing 44-6 home loss to the Titans, winning their last three games against the Sea Eagles, Sharks and Eels.

Last week’s 12-10 triumph over Parramatta was as steely as they come and the Raiders will be hoping for more of the same against a Knights side that are there for the taking.

Newcastle depend on the fitness of Mitchell Pearce and Kalyn Ponga to win games and neither appear to be operating at 100 per cent right now.

Pearce missed last week through injury, and although he’s been named on an extended bench, is no certainty to take the field, while Ponga was playing through a sternum problem last week.

Another glaring issue for the Knights is their inability to perform outside of New South Wales – they’ve lost their last 10 matches outside the state dating back 25 months, with their last two matches seeing them go down 48-4 to the Storm and 28-8 to the Raiders.

Newcastle have failed to score more than 10 points in five of their last six games and desperately need Ponga and Pearce firing to stand any chance in most games they play.

VERDICT:

Event though there’s a decent chance Ponga and Pearce will play together in this clash, we’re still going to be backing the team in form and that’s most definitely the Raiders.

Canberra have won three straight and have a new lease on life, while the Knights have been atrocious outside of NSW over the last couple of years.

We’ll be taking the Raiders at the -2.5 line (Best odds $1.90 with Sportsbet) and having a little extra on the Green Machine winning a relatively low-scoring game, considering they only scored 12 points last week and the Knights have failed to score more than 10 in five of their last six.
