Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs Preview & Prediction
Traditional rivals the Eels and Bulldogs lock horns at CommBank Stadium on Saturday in one of the eye-catching opening round games this weekend.
It was a hugely disappointing 2023 for both teams – the Eels finished 10th after making the Grand Final the previous campaign, while the Bulldogs couldn’t make any inroads up the ladder despite a big recruitment drive.
Parramatta fans will be hoping their spine of Clint Gutherson, Dylan Brown and Mitch Moses can spark some of that 2022 form and get their club dreaming again of a first premiership since 1986.
The Eels should be confident of tasting victory here – they’ve won seven of their last eight games against the Bulldogs.
Canterbury have once again signed a plethora of players ahead of the new season, headlined by Stephen Crichton, who will captain the club and start in the centres.
Blake Taaffe gets the nod at fullback despite some shaky trial performances, while Drew Hutchison is preferred to partner Matt Burton in the halves over Toby Sexton.
Attack is once again the big issue for the Dogs – they only managed six points against a Sharks side without Nicho Hynes in their final trial game and there has got to be concerns about how they are going to score points again in 2024.
VERDICT:
Have to back the Eels here. The Dogs, until I see sustained proof, simply can’t attack and can’t see Hutchison suddenly being the catalyst at No. 7 for more points.
Canterbury have also won just two of their last 15 games at CommBank. Eels should be winning this fairly comfortably at home (Best Eels -5.5 line odds $1.70 with Dabble.)
