Penrith Panthers vs Canterbury Bulldogs Preview & Prediction

It could be a cricket score at BlueBet Stadium on Sunday afternoon as competition leaders Penrith host the struggling Bulldogs.

The Panthers navigated the Origin period superbly and now welcome back star halfback Nathan Cleary, along with a quartet of NSW players that were rested last week.

Sitting on top of the table, the Panthers are looking good to become the first team in 40 years to secure three straight premierships.

Ivan Cleary’s side have won eight of their last nine games, with their defence once again the best in the competition. Incredibly, the Panthers have conceded less points throughout the entire season than the Bulldogs in their last five outings.

Canterbury’s defence has been downright abysmal, with the club leaking 30+ points in those five games – including a 44-24 defeat to the Broncos at Belmore last week.

In an emotional day at their spiritual home with Josh Reynolds playing his last game, the Bulldogs were embarrassing in defence, with coach Cameron Ciraldo giving his team a massive spray afterwards.

It obviously doesn’t get any easier here for the Bulldogs, but it looks like Josh Addo-Carr and Viliame Kikau could be late inclusions in a big boost to their attack.

However, their attack still takes a hit, with Toby Sexton sidelined with concussion. Kyle Flanagan is his replacement.

VERDICT

It’s not a question of who wins this, but by how many. Penrith are one of the shortest favourites of the season here and we’ll be backing them to cover a -28.5 line.

The Panthers have actually kept the Bulldogs scoreless in two of their last five meetings, allowing them just four points in one more. Canterbury won’t be able to score double-digits against this Penrith defence, so confident the Panthers can put on a big score against a defence that has leaked 30+ points in their last five (Best Panthers -28.5 line odds $1.91 with bet365.)
