Bulldogs vs Panthers Preview & Prediction

The Panthers will be relishing the chance to rack up a big total when they square off against the lowly Bulldogs at CommBank Stadium on Sunday night.

Penrith are sitting pretty at the top of the ladder as the only unbeaten team after four rounds. It’s been the perfect start to their premiership defence, with wins over the Sea Eagles, Dragons, Knights and Rabbitohs, with three of those coming up 13+ margins.

Nathan Cleary was absent for their first three games, making that feat even more impressive, with the champion halfback returning in last week’s dominant 26-12 victory over the Rabbitohs in the Grand Final rematch.

This Panthers side is showing no signs of a premiership hangover and their production pool is seemingly endless, so expect Ivan Cleary’s troops to be at the pointy end of the ladder for years to come yet.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are still struggling to score points despite an extensive recruitment drive over the off-season that brought in eight new players – including ex-Panthers Matt Burton, Brent Naden and Tevita Pangai Jr.

Canterbury instilled some hope with a gritty opening round win over the Cowboys, but after tight defeats to the Broncos and Sea Eagles, they were blown off the park 44-0 by Melbourne last week.

Interestingly, Kyle Flanagan has been thrown to the wolves for his first game of the season at halfback despite reports he was on the outer at the club and never even trained with halves partner Burton during the off-season.

VERDICT:

Penrith are absolutely flying and have demolished the Bulldogs in their three previous meetings, prevailing by 26 points or more on each occasion and keeping the Dogs try-less in two.

Considering the Bulldogs couldn’t trouble the scoreboard against Melbourne, backing them to fail to hit 10 points seems like a good bet for a match with little to no value (Best Bulldogs fail to score 10 points odds $2.00 with bet365.)
