Canberra Raiders vs Cronulla Sharks Preview & Prediction

The Sharks target a fourth consecutive victory when they travel to the nation’s capital to face the Raiders on Sunday afternoon.

Cronulla haven’t necessarily set the world on fire so far this season, but they’ve only suffered one defeat and started Round 8 on top of the table.

Craig Fitzgibbon’s side are coming off a thumping 42-6 win over the Cowboys last week, meaning they’ve now scored 34+ points in their last three games, also defeating the Rabbitohs 34-22 and Raiders 36-22.

This will indeed be the second time in a month these two teams have squared off, with the Sharks overturning an 18-0 deficit back in Round 4.

Sione Katoa is back from suspension on the wing, but Braydon Trindall is out after his run in with NSW police this past week.

Meanwhile, you never know quite what you’re going to get with the Raiders, but their heavy 34-10 loss to the Broncos last week was compounded by the injury to Jamal Fogarty, who is set to be sidelined for three months.

Fogarty’s kicking game is so key to Canberra’s success and now the Green Machine must field the inexperienced halves pairing of Ethan Strange and Kaeo Weekes.

VERDICT:

Canberra are always stronger at home, but I think the loss of Fogarty is massive. Strange and Weekes will need to step up big time, but not sure I see it happening.

The Sharks haven’t really proven they’re the real deal in 2024 despite sitting top of the table, but after coming back to beat the Raiders earlier in the season, they are deserved favourites here all things considered (Best Sharks -4.5 line odds $1.75 with Dabble.)
