Sharks vs Raiders Preview & Prediction

The Sharks will be aiming to maintain their top four status and snap a seven-game losing run to the Raiders when the two sides meet at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

Cronulla have been impressive under the tutelage of new coach Craig Fitzgibbon this season and have six wins from their last nine games – but one of those defeats did come in the opening round against their opponents on Sunday.

After that narrow 24-19 loss in the nation’s capital, the Sharks went on a four-match winning streak and have gone 2-2 over the last month, defeating the Sea Eagles and Warriors and going down to the Storm and Broncos.

All in all, it’s been a successful start to the season and Fitzgibbon would have been delighted with his side’s defensive effort in the 29-10 win over the Warriors last week after Will Kennedy was sent off and Jesse Ramien was sin-binned, leaving them a man down for the bulk of the game and two-men down for 10 minutes during the second half.

Nicho Hynes has been shifted to fullback to accomodate the loss of Kennedy, with Connor Tracey coming into the centres for Ramien.

Meanwhile, the Raiders have struggled since that aforementioned opening round victory over the Sharks, but a big part of that is due to losing their No. 7 and No. 9 to injury, with Josh Hodgson’s absence a huge blow.

To make matters worse, their most influential player in Jack Wighton is out suspended for this clash, so it’s hard to see Matt Frawley and Brad Schneider conjuring up enough points to make much of an impact here.

Canberra were barely able to put away the embattled Bulldogs at home last week and once again lost the second half, so they aren’t expected to offer much resistance to the high-flying Sharks.

VERDICT:

As mentioned, it’s a great chance for the Sharks to claim their first victory over Canberra since 2018.

Canberra are down on troops and don’t look like they have enough points in them to cause Cronulla too much trouble.

The Sharks’ last five wins have been by 12 points or more, so our best bet is backing them at the line for Sunday (Best Sharks -11.5 line odds $1.91 with bet365.)
