Bulldogs vs Sharks Preview & Prediction

Can the Bulldogs extend their winning momentum and take a top four scalp when they face the inconsistent Sharks to kick off Super Saturday at CommBank?

Canterbury are coming off their first back-to-back regular seasons wins since 2019 after crushing the Eels and Tigers, scoring a combined 74 points.

Mick Potter has improved the Dogs’ attack considerably since taking over from Trent Barrett, while Josh Addo-Carr and Matt Burton have struck up an exciting partnership.

The Bulldogs averaged just 9.6 points under Barrett, but are scoring 26.8 points per game since Potter took over five games ago. Homegrown youngsters Jacob Kiraz and Kurtis Morrin also crossed for tries in their 36-12 win over the Tigers, with Bulldogs fans all of a sudden optimistic about the future.

Meanwhile, the Sharks have been decidedly average since beginning the season with five wins from their first seven games.

Indeed, Cronulla are on their first winning streak since April and have only registered wins over teams outside the top eight over the last two months, including the Titans and Warriors twice, along with Manly.

The Sharks’ early-season momentum that had them touted as premiership contenders has certainly slowed down and they haven’t been convincing at all over the last couple of months, including in a last-start 18-10 win over the Titans.

VERDICT:

This is a great chance for the Bulldogs to continue their sizzling form, but they will have to do it without Potter, who will miss the match with Covid.

Regardless, the Bulldogs have defeated the Sharks in two of the last three seasons and they were playing much worse then than they are now. Cronulla have been going through the motions lately and aren’t operating at anywhere near their best level.

Going for the upset here, with the Bulldogs at the very least covering the +8.5 line, something they’ve done in five of the last seven meetings (Best Bulldogs +8.5 line odds $1.90 with Ladbrokes.)
