Knights vs Titans Preview and Prediction

It’s a huge game to kick off NRL Round 24 on Thursday night as the Knights and Titans square off on the Sunshine Coast.

Newcastle can wrap up a finals spot if they can claim a fifth consecutive victory, while the Titans must win to keep their top eight hopes alive following back-to-back defeats to heavyweights Melbourne and South Sydney.

The Knights are rolling with Mitchell Pearce and Kalyn Ponga returning from injury to give the side some spark in attack, with Newcastle winning their last four matches.

However, it hasn’t exactly been convincing stuff – the Knights still rank 15th in attack for points scored this season, only ahead of the lowly Bulldogs, while they’ve won their last four matches by 1-12 margins.

But, to take the positives, it shows the Knights don’t mind getting into the grind and are coming out on top in these tight arm wrestles, which is what you want heading into the finals.

Meanwhile, the Titans were on a three-match winning streak before running into the Rabbitohs and Storm over the last fortnight, leaking 36 and 34 points in those defeats.

It leaves the Titans needing to win this game to keep their finals hopes alive, but can their touch footy style of play conquer the Knights’ steely resolve?

VERDICT:

It’s looming as a tight contest, despite the last four meetings between the teams being decided by 24 points or more.

We’re not convinced the Titans have the necessary grit to tough this one out – the three matches they won before the Storm and Rabbitohs defeats were against arguably the three worst teams in the competition right now in the Bulldogs, Cowboys and Dragons.

Gold Coast have also lost their last eight games against teams currently inside the top eight, illustrating they are being outclassed when facing superior sides.

Newcastle haven’t exactly set the world on fire in their four-match winning streak, but they are getting the job done. We’re going to back another low-scoring game involving the Knights and Newcastle to edge it in a tight contest (Best Under 49.5 points odds $1.90 with Sportsbet).
