Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs Preview & Prediction

It’s a must-win game for the Knights as they attempt to consolidate their top eight status when they meet the lowly Bulldogs on Sunday.

Newcastle’s finals hopes looked dead and buried a month or so ago, but they’ve since won five straight games to surge into seventh spot on the ladder.

A 66-0 demolition of the Bulldogs was the catalyst for their current run and the Knights will be hoping to conjure up a similar performance here.

The Knights were fortunate to come away with the two points last week, coming from behind to edge out the Dolphins 30-28 in Perth, so Adam O’Brien will be wanting a more polished and disciplined performance here.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are finally starting to get their full team back on deck after various injury problems throughout the season, but it’s all come too late.

Canterbury have won two of their last four games since the aforementioned 66-0 thrashing by the Knights, with Toby Sexton’s arrival at halfback lifting their attack, while Viliame Kikau will be keen to make up for lost time after missing the bulk of the season with a pectoral injury.

The Dogs should be well rested after last week’s bye, which followed a 23-22 triumph over the Dolphins.

VERDICT

Can’t see the Knights repeating their 66-point drubbing, but they should still win in what promises to be another high-scoring affair.

Five of the Bulldogs’ last six games have seen 60+ points scored, while the Knights have seen 50+ points in their last five games against teams in the bottom five on the ladder.

Canterbury’s attack has improved, so they should be able to contribute nicely to the total, but they also have the worst defence in the competition, so the Knights should be able to score freely too (Best Over 46.5 total points odds $1.85 with bet365.)
