Bulldogs vs Knights Preview and Prediction

Despite qualifying for the finals and enjoying an overall successful season, the Knights come into the start of the 2021 season with several question marks surrounding the club.

After losing their only trial match to Melbourne, the Knights have now lost their last three matches by 20 points or more. Additionally, the club has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons during the off-season due to the controversy relating to Mitchell Pearce.

Throw in the fact Kalyn Ponga, Edrick Lee, Blake Green and Lachlan Fitzgibbon are all injured for Round 1 and their poor recent record against the Bulldogs and it’s a big surprise Newcastle are fairly dominant favourites with the bookies here.

Canterbury have been battling for the last few seasons after Des Hasler left the club in disarray, but the Dogs appear set to regain their bite following the appointment of new coach Trent Barrett and the recruitment of several big names.

The Bulldogs have been crying out for a halfback for a number of years now and they may have just found their man in former Roosters No. 7 Kyle Flanagan, while Origin players Corey Allan and Nick Cotric add further star power to the backline.

With Matt Burton and Josh Addo-Carr set to join the club from 2022, the Bulldogs could be a dominant force in the NRL again sooner rather than later.

Barrett did wonders with the Panthers young halves pairing of Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai last year and if he can work similar magic with Flanagan and the talented Jake Averillo, then the Dogs could surprise a lot of teams in 2021.

With Newcastle far from in an ideal place to start the season, I’m liking the Bulldogs with a 5.5 head start given their excellent record against the Hunter side.

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Newcastle Knights Teams

As mentioned, Newcastle are missing several stars from their backline to injury, including Kalyn Ponga, Edrick Lee and Hymel Hunt, while Kurt Mann will play five-eighth in place of Blake Green.

Star signing Tyson Frizell will make his club debut in the second row, while Jayden Brailey is back from knee surgery at hooker.

Corey Allan, Nick Cotric and Kyle Flanagan make their Bulldogs debuts in the backline, while Jack Hetherington also plays his first game for the club at prop.

Jake Averillo gets the nod to partner Flanagan in the halves, while Bradley Deitz gets an NRL debut off the bench with Jeremy Marshall-King out with a foot injury.
