St George Illawarra Dragons vs Newcastle Knights Preview & Prediction
The Knights will be looking to continue their incredible winning run into the finals when they face the Dragons at Kogarah on Saturday night.
It’s been a remarkable turnaround for the Knights – they were languishing in 14th spot on the ladder after Round 19, but eight wins on the trot have propelled them into fifth and a guaranteed top six finish for the first time since 2006.
Newcastle’s run has been inspired by the form of Kalyn Ponga, who was arguably the best player in the competition over the last two months before suffering a shoulder injury last week.
Ponga will miss this game as a result and is facing a race against time to be fit in time for the finals starting next week.
Meanwhile, it’s been another disappointing season for the Dragons, who will finish second-last for their equal-worst ladder position.
There’s definite potential at the Dragons, but the club is still in shambles and they just can’t seem to get it right off the field or find any consistency on it.
The Dragons have lost eight of their last nine games, but their last six defeats have been by a 1-12 margin, so they’re not far off at the moment.
VERDICT
Really tough game to call. The Dragons have the ability, but they obviously can’t be trusted, while the Knights have lost Ponga and have already secured a home final, so perhaps they take their foot off the pedal here.
Dragons’ home games have been high scoring for the most part this season, with eight of the last 11 producing Over 45.5 points. Dragons can pile on the points in the right mood and the Knights have been scoring at will over the last two months, so even without Ponga, this should still prove to be a high-scoring affair (Best Over 45.5 total points odds $1.91 with bet365.)
