Tigers vs Knights Preview and Prediction

Languishing in the bottom half of the ladder, both the Tigers and Knights are desperate for the win when they collide to begin the NRL’s Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

The Tigers remain one of the most inconsistent and erratic teams in the NRL and until they can put some sustained performances in, they won’t be challenging for the top eight.

After edging the Dragons 16-8 in a gritty display, the Tigers fell back into old habits with some poor defence to lose 36-28 to the Titans last week.

Gold Coast scored three tries in the first 14 minutes and from there the Tigers had it all to do – and although they bounced back strongly with five tries, they were always facing an uphill battle to stage the comeback.

That loss leaves the Tigers in 15th spot on the ladder, above only the Bulldogs. However, the good news for the Tigers is that they are facing one of just two teams they’ve defeated so far in 2021 on Friday night.

Newcastle have understandably struggled since losing Mitchell Pearce to injury, but they do bring some confidence and winning momentum into this clash after recovering from 16-0 down to beat the Raiders last week.

The Knights produced a tremendous second-half display to roll over the top of the Raiders, but they won’t want a repeat of their first half showing here.

Although they prevailed in Wagga last week, the Knights are still finding it tough on the road and have lost seven of their last nine away matches.

I’m still not entirely convinced of the Knights without Pearce and I’m not taking too much from their win over the Raiders given Canberra’s terrible form at the moment.

There’s not much value in backing the Knights either. The Tigers are far from reliable, but they’ve improved over the last fortnight and have won four of the last six meetings with Newcastle.

If they can put together a better start than last week, the Tigers are capable of registering the upset here.
