Knights vs Cowboys Preview and Prediction
The Cowboys target their fifth straight home win over the Knights when the two sides square off in the opening match of Round 11 on Thursday night.
Both sides are coming off a last-start loss during Magic Round and are locked together in the bottom half of the table on eight points with 4-6 records, making this a must-win clash for each team.
North Queensland are in better shape coming into this clash. Todd Payten’s side have won four of their last six matches and their last three at home.
Scoring points hasn’t been an issue for the Cowboys during that run – they’ve scored 26 points or more in three of those four victories, including 30 each in back-to-back wins over the Tigers and Bulldogs.
However, the Cowboys have only beaten sides languishing at the bottom of the ladder or the out-of-form Raiders and were brought back down to earth in a 30-16 loss to the Roosters last week.
Meanwhile, the Knights have lost six of their last eight matches and are without Kalyn Ponga for this clash, with the fullback still suffering from injury that kept him out of Magic Round last week.
Ponga’s absence certainly contributed to a disappointing 36-18 loss to the Tigers, which was Newcastle’s fourth straight loss by 13+ margins.
With Mitchell Pearce also sidelined, the Knights simply don’t have the creativity in attack to trouble most sides.
As a result, the Cowboys should have too much firepower in this encounter. North Queensland have consistently been scoring points and are in the box seat to record their fifth straight home win over the Knights.
