NRL Round 20 preview and predictions for all eight games — Cronulla v Newcastle headlines a top-eight logjam, the Dolphins and Cowboys clash in a genuine six-pointer, and Penrith chase the minor premiership. Our tips, head-to-head reads and best bets for the round.
Round 20 opens on Thursday night with ladder-leaders Penrith hosting a Broncos side in freefall, before the pick of the round — Cronulla v Newcastle, fourth against fifth — headlines Friday. Catch up on Round 19 results first: Cronulla’s 66-0 demolition of the Dolphins, the Cowboys’ one-point steal at Brookvale and South Sydney edging the Knights all reshaped the eight.
The race for the top eight is a genuine logjam — positions five to ten are covered by just six competition points — which makes Sharks v Knights and the Dolphins v Cowboys six-pointer (both 10-7, level on points) the games with the most riding on them. Penrith (13-3) remain clear on top of the premiership market, chasing the minor premiership. Parramatta have the bye. Below are our Round 20 predictions and head-to-head reads for every game; model the run home with the ladder predictor.

Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos
Prediction: Panthers to win by 13+ points
The round opener pits the competition leaders against a side in freefall. Penrith (1st, 13-3) return from the bye with a huge points differential and the look of a team building toward another September charge; Brisbane (14th, 5-11) arrive on the back of four straight losses and have been leaking points badly.
The class and form gap is enormous. Back the Panthers to win comfortably on the line, and a Penrith edge or forward tryscorer given how open Brisbane’s defence has been of late.

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights
Prediction: Sharks to win by 1-12 points
The game of the round — fourth-placed Cronulla (10-6) against fifth-placed Newcastle (11-6), a genuine top-eight seeding clash between two in-form sides. The Sharks arrive off a stunning 66-0 demolition of the Dolphins; the Knights have won three of their last four, with their losses coming by the narrowest of margins.
Home advantage and that monstrous form line tip it Cronulla’s way, but Newcastle’s tight, low-scoring football says this stays close. Lean the Sharks on a small handicap rather than a blowout, and consider the unders given the Knights’ defensive grind.

Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm
Prediction: Roosters to win by 1-12 points
The marquee Friday-night TV game. The Roosters (3rd, 11-5) are humming on a three-win stretch and defending a top-three spot at Allianz; Melbourne (10th, 8-9) are scrapping just to hold a place in the eight and have blown hot and cold — that 4-30 loss to Manly a genuine red flag.
Home, in-form and higher on the ladder, the Roosters are the play — but the Storm are never an easy out, so keep the margin band moderate. Back the Tricolours on the line.

Canberra Raiders vs South Sydney Rabbitohs
Prediction: Rabbitohs to win by 1-12 points
A classic trap game. South Sydney (6th, 9-7) are the more talented, higher-placed side and chasing a top-four push, but Canberra (12th, 7-10) come off a 40-16 thumping of the Bulldogs and have the home-ground factor at GIO Stadium.
We lean the Rabbitohs on class, but this shapes as a tight, physical contest rather than a comfortable win — Souths on a small line is the sensible read, with the Raiders live at home.
Head-to-head: Raiders vs Rabbitohs prediction & H2H record →
NZ Warriors vs St George Illawarra Dragons
Prediction: Warriors to win by 13+ points
Second-placed New Zealand (11-5) host the competition’s bottom side at their Go Media Stadium fortress, where they have been formidable all season. St George Illawarra (17th, 2-14) sit deep in wooden-spoon territory with the worst points differential in the league.
Everything points to a comfortable Warriors win: back them to cover a sizeable handicap and rack up a big home total.
Head-to-head: Warriors vs Dragons prediction & H2H record →
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Wests Tigers
Prediction: Bulldogs to win by 1-12 points
Canterbury (11th, 7-9) host a Wests Tigers side (13th, 7-10) that is winless in four and conceding heavily. The Bulldogs still harbour faint top-eight hopes and have the home crowd at Accor, which should be enough against a struggling opponent.
The caveat is Canterbury’s own inconsistency — they were beaten 40-16 by Canberra recently — so this isn’t a blowout lock. Back the Bulldogs on the line at home.
Head-to-head: Bulldogs vs Wests Tigers prediction & H2H record →
Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Sea Eagles
Prediction: Sea Eagles to win by 1-12 points
Manly (9th, 8-8) carry an elite points differential for a side outside the eight — their losses have been agonisingly narrow (a point to the Cowboys, a point to the Bulldogs) — and they are desperate to climb back into the top eight. Gold Coast (16th, 4-12) are out of contention but have genuine upset pedigree at home, having toppled Penrith earlier in the season.
Lean the Sea Eagles to win a tight one, but respect the Titans at Cbus — the value may sit with Gold Coast plus the points.
Head-to-head: Titans vs Sea Eagles prediction & H2H record →
Dolphins vs North Queensland Cowboys
Prediction: Cowboys to win by 1-12 points
The round’s true six-pointer — the Dolphins (7th) and Cowboys (8th) are level on 24 points, scrapping directly for a spot in the eight. The Dolphins limp in off that 66-0 hiding from Cronulla and a one-point loss to Newcastle, while North Queensland have banked wins over Manly and Penrith and look the more settled.
It’s genuinely hard to split two 10-7 sides, but the slight lean is to the Cowboys on recent form — treat it as a coin-flip and favour the line or close-margin markets over a big spread.
