Roosters vs Panthers Preview and Prediction

The first of two blockbuster showdowns on Super Saturday pits an in-form Roosters side up against a Panthers side coming off a thrashing at the hands of reigning premiers Melbourne.

The Roosters have been the hardest hit club by injuries this season, but they keep defying adversity to still be in top four contention, which is a remarkable effort.

Trent Robinson’s side have been outstanding over the last month, digging out tough wins over the lowly Bulldogs and Cowboys before stepping it up with 28-8 and 28-0 victories over the Knights and Eels respectively.

Defence has been key for the Roosters, who have leaked just eight points in their last two wins. Interestingly, those two wins came against teams who were missing their halfback in the Knights (Mitch Pearce) and the Eels (Mitch Moses).

Could they do it again against another team who could be without their star No. 7?

A final call will be made on Nathan Cleary towards the end of the week, but if he fails to line up for the Panthers, the Roosters will certainly fancy their chances of registering the upset.

Penrith haven’t been at all convincing since Cleary went down with injury during Origin, claiming narrow wins over the lowly Warriors and Broncos before suffering a crushing 37-10 loss to Melbourne last week.

The Panthers will be lacking more strike power in attack, with Stephen Crichton suspended and joining Origin winger Brian To’o on the sidelines.

VERDICT:

It all depends on whether Cleary plays. If he does, the Panthers should have enough class to get by – but if he doesn’t, the Roosters have the confidence and form to cause the upset.

At the time of writing, Cleary isn’t set to play, so we’ll be backing the Roosters to cover the line, while we can get big value in a two-leg same game multi that tips the Roosters to earn their fourth 13+ win on the trot and under the total points line (Best Roosters +9.5 line odds $1.90 with Ladbrokes).

Roosters vs Panthers Teams

Josh Morris joins the Roosters’ growing casualty ward and is replaced in the backline by mid-week signing Dale Copley.

Nathan Cleary hasn’t been named by the Panthers, but a final call on his fitness will be made at the end of the week. Isaah Yeo returns in the second row, while Tevita Pangai Jr makes his club debut off the bench. Stephen Crichton is suspended and replaced by Paul Momoirovski.
