Wests Tigers vs Panthers Preview and Prediction

If there’s ever a time to play the rampant Penrith Panthers, it’s now – but can the Tigers take advantage of the undermanned competition leaders at Leichhardt on Friday night?

Penrith are paying the price for their brilliant last couple of seasons and in particular undefeated start to 2021, with seven of their stars all away on Origin duty.

Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai, Brian To’o, Isaah Yeo, Liam Martin, Api Koroisau and Kurt Capewell will all be missing for this encounter as the Panthers attempt to rack up win No. 13 in a row.

Such is their depth, the Panthers are still favourites to do just that, with Matt Burton shifting to the halves and Stephen Crichton reverting to centre. The fact both players are returning to their preferred positions highlights just how many options the Panthers have.

With just 88 points conceded in 12 matches and with one side failing to hit double digits in five of the last seven meetings between the sides, we can expect another low-scoring clash here.

The Tigers have the opportunity all other NRL teams dream of in facing the Panthers without seven of their best players, but whether they can take advantage remains to be seen.

If there’s a team that can blow this chance, it’s certainly the inconsistent Tigers – Michael Maguire’s side haven’t won back-to-back matches since June 2020, but that’s exactly what they’ll be trying to do after knocking over the Dragons last weekend.

VERDICT:

The Tigers certainly have a good chance of pulling off the upset given the circumstances, but the Panthers have been incredible all season and still have the nucleus of a strong side on the park for this one.

Penrith’s defence has been sensational, which should result in another low-scoring game between the teams. The Tigers haven’t done anything over the last 12 months to suggest they can beat the competition leaders, no matter how depleted they are. We’ll be backing the Panthers home in a tight one (Panthers win & under 46.5 points at $2.75 – best odds with Sportsbet).
