Rabbitohs vs Broncos Preview & Prediction

Can the Rabbitohs avenge their shock loss to the Broncos from Round 1 when the two teams resume hostilities at Accor Stadium on Thursday night?

That 11-4 win for the Broncos was significant in more ways than one. For starters, they did it without former Souths halfback Adam Reynolds, who was missing due to COVID-19 protocols, while it was also one of just two defeats for the Rabbitohs when starting as favourites over their last 27 outings.

Reynolds will play this time in what is set to be a mouth-watering match-up against his former club, including long-time halves partner Cody Walker and new kid on the block Lachlan Illias.

Both teams come into this showdown with a 4-4 record, but Souths certainly have the edge.

Brisbane have been abysmal away from Suncorp Stadium over the last few years and have lost 18 of their last 20 such matches.

The Broncos may be coming off good wins over the Bulldogs and Sharks, but they haven’t won three consecutive matches since 2019 and we need to see more before we can confidently back them in big games like this.

In saying that, the Rabbitohs haven’t been convincing at all across their eight games, but new coach Jason Demetriou is confident his side are building nicely.

Souths have won three of their last four after a tough draw to open the season, including a big 40-22 victory over the Sea Eagles last week – although it must be noted that Manly played the majority of the contest a man down after Karl Lawton’s first-half send-off.

VERDICT:

Souths are still far from their best, but they are the superior team here and should be able to avenge their Round 1 loss and win this relatively comfortably.

As mentioned, the Broncos have lost 18 of their last 20 games away from Suncorp, while Souths are averaging 32 points per victory this season and have won each of their last five matches at Accor Stadium by 12 points or more. Throw in the fact the Bunnies have covered the -11.5 line in their last three wins over Brisbane and we’re liking Souths to win this and win it well (Best Rabbitohs -12 line odds $1.91 with bet365).
