South Sydney Rabbitohs vs St George Illawarra Dragons Preview & Prediction

Clinging onto a spot in the top eight, the Rabbitohs will have to be on guard as they prepare to face the Dragons at Barlow Park in Cairns on Saturday.

South Sydney haven’t won back-to-back games since early May and come into this encounter having lost five of their last seven.

With a full-strength squad back on deck, including the return of superstar fullback Latrell Mitchell, the Rabbitohs still haven’t managed to find their groove, barely beating the Tigers before suffering a 26-16 loss to the out-of-form Sharks in Perth last week.

The Rabbitohs were belted in that game, scoring three late tries to flatter themselves on the scoreline, so they will need considerable improvement here.

Meanwhile, the Dragons actually haven’t been too bad over the last few weeks, beating the Tigers and pushing the Sea Eagles and Eels all the way in respective six-point defeats.

St George Illawarra have suffered a blow for this contest though, with in-form centre Zac Lomax sidelined, along with Jack Bird.

The Dragons will be confident of springing the upset here – they’ve won the last two NRL meetings between the teams, scoring 32+ points in both.

VERDICT

The Rabbitohs really shouldn’t be losing this with their season on the line, but stranger things have happened and the Dragons have been playing well lately, along with beating the Bunnies earlier this season.

Even though it’s a high total, we’re going to back Over 50.5 points for our best bet. The Dragons have been one of the best overs teams all season and their attack is very good despite their lowly ladder position, while Souths are always good for points.

Souths have seen 50+ points in seven of their last eight games vs teams outside the top eight, while the Dragons have seen 60+ points in their last four games vs top four teams. Souths aren’t in the top four at the moment, but for all intents and purposes, they are really a top four side. The last meeting earlier this season also produced 66 total points (Best Over 50.5 total points odds $1.91 with bet365.)
