Rabbitohs vs Roosters Preview & Prediction

Another instalment of the oldest rivalry in rugby league takes place on Friday night as the Rabbitohs stare down the barrel of a 0-3 start to the season when they lock horns with the Roosters.

After making the grand final last season, the Rabbitohs have struggled to open this year’s campaign, going down to the Broncos and Storm.

Souths offered nothing in attack against the Broncos in a 11-4 defeat and were kept scoreless for the first 68 minutes last week against Melbourne before one of the most insane last 10 minutes of a game you’re likely to see this season.

The Bunnies ran in three tries in the last 12 minutes to somehow draw level with the Storm at 14-14, with Latrell Mitchell nailing a two-point field goal to send the game into golden point.

However, Souths couldn’t carry their momentum into sudden death and were downed by a Ryan Papenhuyzen field goal, leaving them 0-2 to start to the season.

Meanwhile, the Roosters bounced back from their poor performance in the opening round against Newcastle by cruising past the Sea Eagles last Friday night.

The Roosters put on a first-half clinic, scoring four tries to put the game out of Manly’s reach – although Trent Robinson will still want improvement after conceding two tries to one in the second half.

Revenge will be on the Roosters’ mind after their injury-ravaged team was thumped 54-12 in the finals last season – a match where Mitchell was also suspended and ruled out of the grand final for his cheap shot on Joey Manu.

VERDICT:

The Rabbitohs have won the last three meetings between the teams, including scoring 54 and 60 points in two of those games, but they are deserved underdogs for this game.

Save for a 12-minute blitz at the end of the Storm match, Souths don’t look like scoring – Cody Walker isn’t an organiser and Lachlan Ilias is still new to this level.

Luke Keary’s experience in the halves should prove the difference, so we’re expecting the Roosters to dig this one out, while Souths’ current inability to score points see our best bet come in the total points market, with under 37.5 (Best Under 37.5 points odds $1.97 with bet365.)
