Sydney Roosters vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Preview & Prediction
It’s arguably the most fierce rivalry in Australian sport as the Roosters and Rabbitohs lock horns on Friday night at Allianz Stadium.
South Sydney have been under immense pressure to start the season, losing both of their games against the Sea Eagles and Broncos, leaking 64 points in the process.
Going back to last season, the Rabbitohs have lost 11 of their last 15 games and coach Jason Demetriou is under major scrutiny to get the best out of his star-studded line-up.
Latrell Mitchell doesn’t look mentally at the races to start the season, while much has been made of Demetriou’s decision to swing the axe on halfback Lachlan Ilias after two games, with Dean Hawkins slotting into the halves.
Jack Wighton returns from a suspension to make his Rabbitohs debut in the centres.
Meanwhile, the Roosters are 1-1 following their two outings, failing to back up their impressive win in Vegas over the Broncos with an error-riddled performance against the Sea Eagles last week.
The Roosters made 20 errors and finished with just 42 per cent of possession as some bad habits of the last couple of seasons returned to their game.
Luke Keary is out with another concussion for the Roosters, meaning Sandon Smith comes into partner Sam Walker in the halves, while Angus Crichton and Connor Watson make their first appearances of the season on the bench.
VERDICT:
Can’t back the Rabbitohs in their current state – there’s too much unrest surrounding the club and not sure what Hawkins can bring to the team that Illias doesn’t.
Roosters have won three of the last four meetings and if they can simply hold onto the ball and have better discipline than last week, they should have the class to come out on top (Best Roosters -3.5 line odds $1.92 with Dabble.)
