Roosters vs Dragons Preview and Prediction

Another blockbuster ANZAC Day showdown awaits when the Roosters and Dragons renew their rivalry on Sunday afternoon at the SCG.

Both sides remain in the top eight despite last-start defeats and will be determined for an immediate return to the winners circle.

The Roosters initially did well after losing Luke Keary to a season-ending ACL injury, defeating the Sharks and Warriors in back-to-back games, but the five-eighth’s absence was felt in last week’s 20-4 loss to Melbourne.

Outclassed and gradually broken down, the Roosters couldn’t offer anything in attack and scored their only try off a kick in the last minute. It was an eye opener to just how tough the Roosters are going to find it against the NRL’s very best without Keary.

Boyd Cordner’s continued absence and Jake Friend’s retirement also hasn’t helped the Roosters. That’s a lot of experience missing.

Meanwhile, the Dragons saw their four-match winning streak snapped by the Warriors in a 20-14 defeat last week, but they still showed enough to suggest they can maintain their spot in the eight throughout the season.

The Dragons have an extremely underrated backline made up of Matt Dufty, Mikaele Ravalawa, Jack Bird, Zac Lomax and Corey Norman and have enough firepower to trouble anyone on their day.

I think this is a 50-50 contest, so I’ll be backing the Dragons home in a tight one here. I wasn’t impressed at all with the Roosters last week – their inexperienced halves combo of Drew Hutchison and Sam Walker couldn’t create anything and the pressure will only mount for this ANZAC Day clash.

Dragons by a 1-12 margin looks to be the value bet here.

Roosters vs Dragons Teams

Brett Morris is set to return for the Roosters after missing last week with a calf injury, while Sam Verrills plays his first game in a year as he comes back into the side at hooker.

Ben Hunt is 50-50 to return for the Dragons, but at this stage Adam Clune is the starting No. 7. Blake Lawrie returns at prop after missing last week with a cork.
