Round 19 opens on Thursday night with a Kardinia Park cliffhanger — Geelong and St Kilda both scrapping to stay in the finals picture — before a genuine top-four showdown (Sydney v Adelaide at the SCG) and the traditional MCG blockbuster (Collingwood v Carlton) headline the weekend. Catch up on Round 18 results first, where Collingwood kept climbing and Carlton’s seven-game winning streak was ended by a 64-point Hawthorn thumping.

Fremantle (15-2) still sit clear on top of the premiership market from Sydney, with a six-team logjam from third to eighth and another cluster of sides — Geelong, St Kilda, GWS, Carlton and North — all live for the final finals berths. Below are our Round 19 predictions and head-to-head reads for every game; model the run home with the AFL Ladder Predictor.

Geelong vs St Kilda

Prediction: Geelong to win by 1-12 points

The round opens under Thursday-night lights at GMHBA Stadium with two sides marooned just outside the eight — Geelong (9th, 9-8) a place and a game ahead of St Kilda (10th, 8-9), and both treating this as close to a must-win for their finals hopes. The Cats’ superior percentage (115 to 106) points to the higher ceiling, and their record at Kardinia Park is a serious edge.

The Saints have been competitive all year and won’t be blown away, so this shapes as a tight one rather than a rout: back Geelong at home, but keep it inside the two-and-a-half-goal band.

Sydney vs Adelaide

Prediction: Sydney to win by 1-12 points

The game of the round on merit — second-placed Sydney (13-4) hosting fifth-placed Adelaide (11-6) at the SCG, the only match on the card pitting two top-five sides. The stakes are direct: a win lifts the Crows into the top four, while Sydney can cement second and its double-chance. Both are elite on percentage (Swans 131, Crows 117).

The SCG advantage and the Swans’ higher ceiling tilt us to Sydney, but two sides this good rarely blow each other out — take Sydney in the tight band, with Adelaide on the plus line the safety play.

Port Adelaide vs Fremantle

Prediction: Fremantle to win by 40+ points

Ladder-leading Fremantle (15-2) travel to Adelaide Oval to face a Port Adelaide side (15th, 6-11) that has been gutted through the middle. The Power are without their entire star midfield — Zak Butters (syndesmosis surgery, likely done for the season), Jason Horne-Francis (suspended) and Connor Rozee all out, with Mitch Georgiades also sidelined by concussion.

The competition’s benchmark side against a depleted, out-of-contention Power team can only point one way: back Fremantle to win big and cover a large line.

Head-to-head: Port Adelaide vs Fremantle prediction & H2H record →

North Melbourne vs Melbourne

Prediction: Melbourne to win by 1-12 points

Melbourne (6th, 11-6) can’t afford a slip against a North Melbourne side (13th, 8-9) that sits just below the finals cut and has been competitive at Marvel Stadium. The Demons have the class and the ladder position, but they let a big lead slip against Hawthorn a fortnight ago — a warning against expecting a blowout here.

Back Melbourne to win, but this reads as a manageable rather than emphatic margin; North on the plus line has appeal if the Roos hang around.

Head-to-head: North Melbourne vs Melbourne prediction & H2H record →

Collingwood vs Carlton

Prediction: Collingwood to win by 1-12 points

The traditional MCG blockbuster, and this year it carries finals weight. Collingwood (8th, 9-7-1) arrive on a four-game winning streak and climbing toward the double-chance places; Carlton (12th, 8-9) had their own seven-match run ended by a 64-point loss to Hawthorn and are clinging to the fringe of the eight.

The Pies are deserved favourites at around a six-and-a-half-point line, but rivalry games of this scale rarely blow out — back Collingwood to win it inside two goals, with Carlton on the plus line the value angle for a side that was so hot before last week.

Head-to-head: Collingwood vs Carlton prediction & H2H record →

West Coast vs Brisbane

Prediction: Brisbane to win by 40+ points

Brisbane (4th, 11-6) are one of the competition’s form sides and cross the country to face a West Coast outfit (16th, 4-13) sitting third-last on percentage (72). The class gap is enormous, and the Lions’ scoring power should overwhelm an Eagles side that has struggled badly all year.

The one caveat is the Perth trip — road form can tighten these things — but everything else says Brisbane by plenty: back the Lions to cover a big line.

Head-to-head: West Coast vs Brisbane prediction & H2H record →

Richmond vs Hawthorn

Prediction: Hawthorn to win by 40+ points

Hawthorn (3rd, 11-5-1) are charging at the top four — fresh off that 64-point demolition of Carlton — and meet a Richmond side (17th, 2-15) that is deep into a rebuild and second-last on the ladder. On form and personnel this is as lopsided as the card gets.

Back the Hawks to win comfortably and cover a large line; the only question is how much they choose to pile on with percentage in mind.

Head-to-head: Richmond vs Hawthorn prediction & H2H record →

Gold Coast vs Western Bulldogs

Prediction: Gold Coast to win by 1-12 points

The round’s genuine coin-flip. The Western Bulldogs (7th, 10-7) sit inside the eight but on a fragile percentage (92), while Gold Coast (14th, 7-10) are only just below the cut and dangerous at home at People First Stadium. The market has this as close to a pick-’em.

We lean the Suns at home on the back of that home-ground edge and the Dogs’ vulnerable percentage — but flag it as the most volatile result on the card, one for small stakes or the close-margin markets.

Head-to-head: Gold Coast vs Western Bulldogs prediction & H2H record →

Essendon vs GWS

Prediction: GWS to win by 40+ points

The round closes at Marvel with a finals-hungry GWS side (11th, 8-9) against an Essendon team (18th, 1-16) anchored to the bottom of the ladder and fighting the wooden spoon. The Giants need wins and percentage to force their way into September, and the Bombers have been beaten heavily too often this season.

Back GWS to win big; their need to build percentage adds extra motivation to make this a large one.
