Hawthorn Steal a Point on the Siren as MCG Erupts

The story of the round and one of the most dramatic finishes in recent AFL memory. Collingwood led inside the final minute and looked to have it sealed when Hawthorn earned a free kick deep in attack — and Dylan Moore drilled the equaliser on the siren to lock it up at 15.3 (93) all to 13.15 (93). The first AFL draw of the 2026 season, with Hawks captain Darcy Moore the unfortunate central figure after dropping a critical defensive mark and giving away a high tackle in the dying seconds.

For the Hawks, this is a season-saving point. They go to 5-2-1 and stay firmly in the top-four conversation. For the Magpies, it’s a bitter result — they had the four points in their hand and walked away with two — but they remain in the top-eight mix at 4-3-1.

Brayden Cook’s Showdown Dagger

The Showdown delivered classic Adelaide-Port theatre. Adelaide 11.10 (76) defeated Port Adelaide 11.9 (75) by a single point at Adelaide Oval, with Brayden Cook kicking the match-winner in the dying minutes after the lead had changed hands four times in the final quarter. Port Adelaide will replay one missed shot from a set position late as the moment that cost them — but Adelaide’s pressure inside 50 in the last 10 minutes was the bigger story. The Crows leap into the top-half conversation; Port drop a critical home Showdown.

Brisbane Maul the Bombers — 64-Point Statement

If you doubted the Lions’ contender credentials, Saturday afternoon at Marvel Stadium settled it. Brisbane 22.11 (143) defeated Essendon 11.13 (79), winning by 64 points in a one-sided contest that looked more like a training drill than a top-half clash. The Lions had eight multiple goalkickers, the midfield was a class above, and Will Ashcroft and Lachie Neale were both vintage. Brisbane to 5-3 with strong percentage; Essendon now in genuine crisis at 1-7 and conceding goals in clusters every week.

Richmond Break Through — First Win of 2026

The Tigers had the unwanted “0-7” tag for the first month of the season and broke through in convincing fashion at Optus Stadium, defeating West Coast 15.9 (99) to 13.10 (88). Tim Taranto was best on ground, and the win was built on Richmond’s pressure inside 50 — they kicked five goals to one in the third quarter to put the game beyond the Eagles. West Coast remain at the bottom of the table; Richmond finally get on the board and head into Round 9 with a critical bit of momentum.

Sydney Hold Off Demons in SCG Shootout

A genuine top-of-the-table contest at the SCG. Sydney 19.17 (131) defeated Melbourne 17.12 (114) by 17 points in a high-scoring shootout that swung in the Swans’ favour with a four-goal flurry early in the final quarter. Isaac Heeney was the matchwinner with a 4-goal performance, and the Swans hold their place at the top of the ladder with a ledger of 6-1 and percentage that remains the AFL’s best. Melbourne drop a competitive game but underline they belong in the top-four conversation.

Match-by-Match Review

Fremantle Hand the Bulldogs a Fourth Straight Loss

Fremantle 17.12 (114) defeated Western Bulldogs 15.12 (102) at Marvel Stadium. The Dogs are now on a four-game losing streak — their first since 2019 — and the structural questions are getting louder. Fremantle remain a top-four side at 6-2 with the contested ball numbers to back it up. Caleb Serong was best on ground.

Geelong Blow North Melbourne Off the Park

Geelong 21.9 (135) defeated North Melbourne 13.8 (86) at GMHBA Stadium by 49 points. Patrick Dangerfield rolled back the years with a 3-goal cameo and the Cats’ midfield dominated possessions. North were in the contest at half-time but the Cats kicked 11 goals to four after the break to cruise. Geelong move into the top-eight mix; North’s hot start now starts to look more like a flattering ladder position.

Saints Bury Carlton at Marvel

St Kilda 16.12 (108) defeated Carlton 9.15 (69) by 39 points at Marvel Stadium. Ross Lyon’s defensive system once again strangled the opposition’s attack, and the Saints’ 2026 turnaround is now a genuine story — three big wins in their last four. Carlton continue to struggle and slip further off the top eight at 1-7.

Suns Rebound Against the Giants

Gold Coast 11.17 (83) defeated GWS 8.15 (63) at People First Stadium by 20 points. Both sides combined for 32 behinds in a wasteful, scrappy contest, but the Suns’ pressure was the difference. Touk Miller best on ground for the Suns, who arrest a poor mini-run.

What This Means for the AFL Ladder

Sydney remain at the top with the only one-loss record in the competition (6-1) and the league’s best percentage. Hawthorn salvage their unbeaten record into a 5-2-1 ledger thanks to the siren goal. Brisbane back into the top four conversation at 5-3 with a percentage rocket. Fremantle (6-2) sit comfortably in the top four and Geelong push into the eight.

Below the line: Essendon (1-7), Carlton (1-7) and West Coast (2-6) are now genuinely off the finals pace; Richmond (1-7) finally have one in the bank. The Bulldogs sliding to 4-4 with four straight losses is the most surprising mid-table story of the round.
