NRL Round 27 Results: Highlights & Expert Analysis

Penrith won the J J Giltinan Shield by 26 points of differential after beating Wests Tigers by 28 while the Warriors scraped home by one. Five of eight results went against the ladder. All eight games, the final 2026 ladder and the finals week one bracket.

NRL 2026: Round 27 in Focus

The last round of the regular season delivered the finish it had been set up for. The Warriors and Penrith went in level on 42-point pace and separated by a single point of for-and-against. The Warriors played first and beat Manly 31-30. Penrith played last, knowing exactly what they needed, and beat Wests Tigers 38-10. Final margin in the minor premiership race: plus 336 to plus 310.

Around that, a round with almost nothing riding on it produced five results against the ladder. The last-placed Dragons beat Parramatta, 15th-placed Brisbane won at Accor, Canberra put 50 on the Cowboys and South Sydney put 50 on the Roosters. Catch up on Round 26 results and our Round 27 preview.

Brisbane spoil the Bulldogs’ send-off at Accor

Brisbane Broncos 34 def. Canterbury Bulldogs 20

A dead rubber that neither side needed, and the one with less to play for won it. Brisbane, 15th and out of contention for a month, won by 14 on the road. Canterbury finish twelfth on 28 points, level with Melbourne and Canberra and behind both on differential.

We had Canterbury by 13+ points on the basis that the gap in quality was wide enough. It was not, and a Brisbane side playing for nothing was the wrong team to assume would roll over. Tip lost.

Dolphins survive on the Gold Coast to lock up third

Dolphins 24 def. Gold Coast Titans 20

Much harder than it needed to be. The Dolphins won by four against the side that finished sixteenth, and it was enough: they finish third on 40 points, above the Roosters, with a qualifying final and the double chance. In their fourth season.

We had the Dolphins by 13+ and said they needed percentage as much as the two points. They got the two points and none of the percentage. Right side, wrong band.

Souths put 50 on the Roosters in the derby

South Sydney Rabbitohs 50 def. Sydney Roosters 20

Our game of the round, and it was not close. South Sydney won by 30 at Allianz, the biggest winning margin of the weekend, and finished sixth on 34 points with the best differential of the three sides on that mark bar Cronulla. The Roosters, who were third a fortnight ago, slide to fourth and now travel to Penrith.

We had the Roosters by 1-12 and called it a one-score game. It was a 30-point derby hammering in the other direction. Two straight defeats by an aggregate of 44 is not the form you want going into a qualifying final against the minor premiers.

The Warriors win by one and lose the shield

New Zealand Warriors 31 def. Manly Sea Eagles 30

The result of the round in the context of the season. The Warriors needed to win and to win well; they won by one point against a Manly side already eliminated. That took them to 42 points and plus 310, and it handed Penrith a target they cleared by 18 points of differential a day later.

Manly finish ninth on 28 with a differential of plus 99, the best of any side outside the eight and better than three of the teams in it. They were the story of the second half of the season without ever being in the finals conversation.

We had the Warriors by 13+ and said they needed to win big enough to leave Penrith a real task, and that they would be trying. They were, and they could not. Right side, wrong band, and the band was the whole story.

Canberra put 50 on the Cowboys in Townsville

Canberra Raiders 50 def. North Queensland Cowboys 30

North Queensland were trying to climb out of eighth. They conceded 50 at home instead, finish eighth on 32 points with a differential of minus 84, and now play Cronulla in an elimination final. Canberra, who had nothing to play for, finish eleventh.

We had the Cowboys by 1-12 and flagged that the near-identical differentials made it closer than the ladder suggested. It was closer in neither direction: a 20-point loss at home is the worst possible way to enter a sudden-death final. Tip lost.

Melbourne end Cronulla’s season on a sour note

Melbourne Storm 24 def. Cronulla Sharks 20

Cronulla finish fifth on 34 points with plus 149, the best differential outside the top four, and go into the finals having lost their last two. Melbourne, out of the eight, win by four at Shark Park.

We had the Sharks at home but not by much, and warned that a side with nothing to lose keeps it close. They did more than that. Tip lost, though the shape of the game was right.

The Dragons finish with a win over Parramatta

St George Illawarra Dragons 24 def. Parramatta Eels 22

The wooden spooners win their last game by two. St George Illawarra finish seventeenth on 16 points with a differential of minus 325; Parramatta finish thirteenth.

We had Parramatta by 13+ on the back of their upset of Cronulla the week before, and called the Dragons a side that had not won since the middle of August. They chose the last afternoon of the season to change that. Tip lost, and the lesson is the one this round kept teaching: form lines mean less in a round where half the competition has nothing at stake.

Penrith take the shield in the last game of the season

Penrith Panthers 38 def. Wests Tigers 10

Penrith knew the number before kick-off. The Warriors’ one-point win had left the gap at just two points of differential in New Zealand’s favour, so Penrith needed to win by three. They won by 28 and took the J J Giltinan Shield by 26 points of for-and-against. It is their sixth minor premiership. Wests Tigers finish fifteenth.

We had Penrith by 13+ and wrote that the question was not whether they would win but whether they would win by enough, and that they would be trying to. That is exactly how it played out, and it is the one tip of eight that landed on both counts.

Newcastle Knights had the bye

Newcastle sat out the final round and collected two competition points, finishing on 34 in seventh. Their differential of plus 42 could not improve, which is why South Sydney’s 30-point win was enough to keep the Rabbitohs above them. The two now meet in an elimination final on Friday night.

The Grand Final is Sunday 4 October at Accor Stadium. Qualifying-final winners advance straight to a preliminary final; the losers drop into week two. Elimination-final losers are out.

Round 27 talking points

A minor premiership decided by 26 points of differential, and by the draw. Penrith played the last game of the season and knew the target. The Warriors played 24 hours earlier and won by one. Two clubs finished on identical records, 18-6, and the shield went to the one with the later kick-off and the softer opponent. That is not a criticism of Penrith, who did exactly what the situation demanded, but it is worth noting how much of the outcome was scheduling.

Manly finish ninth with a better differential than three sides in the eight. Plus 99, against North Queensland’s minus 84 in eighth. That is the second week in a row this page has made the point, and the final ladder makes it starker rather than softer.

Five of eight results went against the ladder. The Dragons, Broncos, Raiders, Storm and Rabbitohs all beat higher-placed opposition. A final round where most of the competition has nothing to play for is the worst round of the year to trust form, and our tipping reflected that: three of eight results and one of eight margin bands. The one that landed on both was Penrith, the only side in the round with a concrete, quantified reason to win big.
