AFL Round 21 Preview & Predictions

Round 21 opens with Collingwood v Geelong at the MCG and peaks with ladder-leaders Fremantle hosting the in-form Western Bulldogs under Friday-night lights. Here are our predictions and head-to-head reads for all nine games, with the fifth-to-ninth logjam making every result count.

Round 21 opens on Thursday night at the MCG, where Collingwood and Geelong collide with both stuck in the eighth-versus-ninth logjam, before ladder-leaders Fremantle host the in-form Western Bulldogs under Friday-night lights at Optus — our game of the round. Collingwood vs Geelong

Prediction: Geelong to win by 1-12 points

A Thursday-night MCG blockbuster between two sides separated by half a game. Collingwood (8th, 11-7 and a draw) found something in their road win over Adelaide, while Geelong (9th, 11-8) answered their critics by knocking over Melbourne. The loser here falls into genuine danger of missing the eight.

The Cats’ scoring power has looked a class above in recent weeks, and with Nick Daicos likely to draw close attention, we lean Geelong in a tight one — inside two goals.

Fremantle vs Western Bulldogs

Prediction: Fremantle to win by 13+ points

The game of the round. Fremantle (1st, 17-2) have been irresistible — their 70-point Western Derby demolition was a statement — and now chase the minor premiership at home, where they are near unbeatable. The Bulldogs (7th, 12-7) arrive on a three-game winning streak but have been camped in the seventh-eighth band for nearly two months.

Josh Treacy’s marking presence against the Dogs’ undersized defence is the matchup that decides it. Back the Dockers to win by three goals or more.

St Kilda vs Sydney

Prediction: Sydney to win by 13+ points

Sydney (2nd, 14-5) have not lost to a bottom-half side all season, and St Kilda (10th, 9-10) are clinging to the fringe of contention after a workmanlike win over North Melbourne. The Swans’ 51-point dismantling of GWS showed their best is top-two calibre.

The Saints compete hard at Marvel, but Sydney’s midfield depth and spread should pull away after half-time. Swans by three goals or more.

Hawthorn vs North Melbourne

Prediction: Hawthorn to win comfortably

Hawthorn (3rd, 13-5 and a draw) have crushed their last two opponents by a combined 150+ points, and Nick Watson’s league-leading 44 goals headline a forward line in full flight. North Melbourne (13th, 8-11) have dropped four straight and their finals hopes are effectively gone.

In Launceston, where the Hawks rarely slip, this is the most confident tip of the round — Hawthorn by plenty.

Port Adelaide vs GWS

Prediction: Port Adelaide to win by 1-12 points

Two seasons on life support. Port Adelaide (15th, 6-13) were blitzed by Brisbane last week but return to Adelaide Oval, where they have been far more competitive under Willem Drew’s interim captaincy. GWS (12th, 8-11) are unravelling — their thrashing at the hands of Sydney left their finals hopes hanging by a thread.

Neither side inspires confidence, but home ground splits the difference: Port in a scrap, inside two goals.

Carlton vs Brisbane

Prediction: Brisbane to win by 13+ points

Brisbane (4th, 13-6) have won seven on the trot at an average margin north of 40 points — premiership form by any measure. Carlton (11th, 9-10) got a jolt of life from their win over Gold Coast, and Patrick Cripps will win his share of clearances, but the Blues have not beaten a top-four side all year.

Hugh McCluggage’s running power through the corridor is the difference. Lions by three goals or more at Marvel.

Richmond vs West Coast

Prediction: West Coast to win by 1-12 points

The battle of the bottom: Richmond (18th, 2-17) have lost seven straight, West Coast (16th, 4-15) have been more competitive than their record suggests, and Harley Reid has been the best player on the ground in most of the Eagles’ recent outings.

The Tigers’ kids will have their moments at the MCG, but Reid’s midfield dominance tips it — Eagles in a low-quality arm-wrestle, inside two goals.

Gold Coast vs Melbourne

Prediction: Melbourne to win by 1-12 points

Gold Coast (14th, 7-12) have lost nine in a row and the season cannot end soon enough, while Melbourne (6th, 12-7) are fighting to protect a double-chance position after slipping up against Geelong. Christian Petracca has a point to prove after a quiet outing.

The Suns at home are never free wins and the Demons travel poorly, so keep the margin honest — Melbourne, inside two goals.

Essendon vs Adelaide

Prediction: Adelaide to win comfortably

Essendon (17th, 2-17) have conceded 93 and change in successive weeks and are locked in a wooden-spoon duel with Richmond. Adelaide (5th, 12-7) were torn apart by Collingwood but get the perfect fixture to reset — their ball movement should slice through the Bombers at Marvel.

Expect a response: Crows by a big margin, the round’s other banker alongside Hawthorn.
