A Thursday-night statement at the MCG. Geelong controlled the second half to win by 25 and complete a straight swap with Collingwood on the ladder — the Cats up to seventh, the Magpies out of the eight in ninth. Fremantle 78 def. Western Bulldogs 41

Fremantle made it 18 wins from 20 with a 37-point win at Optus, and their percentage of 147.3 is the best in the competition by a distance. For the Western Bulldogs it was a damaging night: they cling to eighth with a percentage of 94.8, the only side in the top eight under 100.

Swans stay second with a comfortable Marvel win

Sydney 107 def. St Kilda 88

Sydney did what second-placed sides do, pulling clear of St Kilda after half-time to win by 19 and hold their spot behind Fremantle. The Saints are 9-11 and out of realistic contention. Another preview call that landed.

Hawthorn 99 def. North Melbourne 83

Not the demolition the market expected, but Hawthorn got there by 16 to stay third. North Melbourne competed for far longer than their 8-12 record suggests — a reminder that the Hawks’ percentage-building run has slowed at exactly the wrong time of year.

The first of the round’s three upsets against our tips. GWS won by 12 on the road, and while neither side is playing for anything but pride, it was Port’s fourth straight defeat and drops them to 15th at 6-14.

Carlton 154 def. Brisbane 78

The result nobody saw coming. Carlton put 154 points on a Brisbane side that had won seven straight by an average of more than 40 — a 76-point demolition at Marvel that hauls the Blues back to 10-10 and knocks the Lions from fourth to fifth. It is the largest margin of the round and comfortably the biggest upset of Round 21; our preview had Brisbane by 13 or more.

Richmond 84 def. West Coast 73

Richmond finally got one, ending a long losing run with an 11-point win at the MCG and moving off the foot of the ladder to 17th at 3-17. West Coast, who our preview narrowly favoured, drop to 4-16 and are now the more likely wooden-spoon candidate alongside Essendon.

Melbourne 114 def. Gold Coast 105

The closest game of the round. Melbourne needed every bit of a nine-point win on the Gold Coast to stay sixth and keep a double chance alive. The Suns, on a long losing streak, were far more competitive than the market allowed — our preview flagged this as one to keep the margin honest, and so it proved.

Adelaide 145 def. Essendon 73

Adelaide responded to their Collingwood loss in emphatic fashion, piling on 145 points at Marvel to win by 72 and climb to fourth on percentage. Essendon fall to 2-18 and are now favourites for the wooden spoon. The Crows look every bit a top-four side again.

Ladder implications

Fremantle are almost home. At 18-2 with 147.3 per cent, the Dockers are three games clear and the minor premiership is theirs to lose.

The eight changed hands. Geelong are in at seventh, Collingwood out at ninth — and the Magpies are the form casualty of the round. Only two points separate seventh from ninth, so this will move again.

Adelaide and Brisbane swapped. The Crows’ 72-point win and the Lions’ 76-point loss flipped fourth and fifth on percentage alone — a genuine swing in double-chance positioning.

The Bulldogs are the vulnerable one. Eighth at 12-8 but with a percentage of 94.8, they are the only top-eight side under 100 and have the least margin for error in the run home.

The spoon race turned. Richmond’s win lifts them to 3-17 and leaves Essendon last at 2-18.
