Adelaide Demolish North Melbourne — 68-Point Showdown Prep

The biggest margin of the round and a statement performance from a top-eight Adelaide. Adelaide 133 defeated North Melbourne 65 at Adelaide Oval by 68 points, kicking 21 goals against a Kangaroos defence that had no answers for Riley Thilthorpe (5 goals) or the Crows’ midfield triumvirate of Rory Laird, Jordan Dawson and Sam Berry. Adelaide are now four wins from their last five and have climbed back into the top-eight conversation with a percentage that’s finally trending the right way. North drop to 3-7 — their hot early-season start now looks like a flattering ladder position for a side that hasn’t beaten a top-half club since R3.

Geelong Roll On — Demolish Brisbane at the Gabba

Two weeks after blowing Collingwood off the MCG, the Cats backed it up with a road statement at the Gabba — Geelong 117 defeated Brisbane Lions 76 by 41 points. Patrick Dangerfield rolled big numbers again, Bailey Smith was best on ground, and the Cats kicked away in the third quarter to deny Brisbane any momentum. The Lions, who came in at 6-3 and second on the ladder, look genuinely vulnerable for the first time this season. Geelong’s R8-R9-R10 sequence — wins over Collingwood, North and now Brisbane — has them as the most in-form contender in the competition.

West Coast Upset GWS at Optus — Round’s Big Variance Play

The result no one predicted. West Coast 88 defeated GWS 71 at Optus Stadium by 17 points — the Eagles’ second win of the season and easily their best performance. GWS came in needing to win to keep finals hopes alive and instead lost to a club that had been written off back in March. Harley Reid was outstanding through the midfield and the Eagles’ contested ball numbers held up against a top-eight chasing GWS. The Giants drop to a profile that’s now genuinely off the finals pace.

Sydney Survive Collingwood in SCG Thriller

A six-point Friday-night nail-biter at the SCG. Sydney 81 defeated Collingwood 75 after the Pies kicked the last two goals to make it close, but couldn’t quite get the matchwinner inside the final two minutes. Isaac Heeney was again the matchwinner; Errol Gulden was outstanding through the middle. Sydney remain top of the ladder at 8-1 with the only one-loss record in the competition. Collingwood drop to a profile that suggests they’re a top-eight side but not a genuine top-four threat.

Carlton Get Their First Proper Win of 2026

Three weeks after pushing Brisbane at the Gabba and finally finding some structural identity, Carlton broke through for their first competitive 2026 win. Carlton 74 defeated Western Bulldogs 62 at Marvel Stadium by 12 points in a low-scoring grind that suited the Blues’ defensive overhaul. Charlie Curnow kicked four; Patrick Cripps led from the front. The Bulldogs slide continues — they’re now 5-5 with five losses in their last six. Carlton to 2-8 with the form arrow finally pointing up.

Suns Cruise Past Port Adelaide in Darwin

Gold Coast 98 defeated Port Adelaide 73 at TIO Stadium by 25 points — back-to-back wins in Darwin for the Suns, who continue their top-eight push. Sam Flanders was best on ground; Touk Miller rolled big numbers. Port Adelaide drop another tight one and now sit outside the eight.

Demons Climb With Big MCG Win Over Hawks

Melbourne 120 defeated Hawthorn 81 at the MCG by 39 points. Christian Petracca and Kysaiah Pickett were the difference, the Demons’ midfield dominated, and the result lifts Melbourne back into the top-four conversation. Hawthorn now have two losses in three weeks and slip further from the top-four picture — the structural questions are louder than the R7 form suggested.

Fremantle Steamroll Essendon at the MCG

Fremantle 104 defeated Essendon 61 at the MCG by 43 points in a clinical Dockers performance. Caleb Serong was best on ground; Hayden Young rolled big numbers. The Dockers are now 8-2 and locked-in top-four. Essendon drop to 1-9 — wooden-spoon favourites and now genuinely off the finals pace for the rest of 2026.

Saints’ Form Continues — Tigers Quieted at Marvel

St Kilda 109 defeated Richmond 73 at Marvel Stadium by 36 points. Ross Lyon’s defensive system delivered another performance, and the Saints’ 2026 turnaround now looks structurally sustainable. Richmond drop their second straight after the R8 breakthrough — the Tigers’ first-win moment looks more like a one-off than a turnaround.

What This Means for the AFL Ladder

Sydney (8-1) remain the only one-loss side in the competition. Fremantle (8-2) lock in second with a percentage that’s now genuinely top-two material. Geelong (6-3 with three big-margin wins) and Melbourne (6-3) both move into the top-four conversation. Brisbane (6-4) drop after the Geelong blowout and now look beatable for the first time this year.

The mid-table fight is fascinating: Hawthorn (5-4-1), St Kilda (5-5), Gold Coast (4-5) and Adelaide (5-5) all sit in or just outside the eight. Carlton (2-8) and Richmond (1-9) finally have their respective form arrows pointing up, but it’s too late for the Blues to be considered finals threats. Essendon (1-9), GWS (3-7) and West Coast (3-7) are now genuinely off the finals pace.
